r/PersonalFinanceCanada on Reddit: Best Google Sheet Template for budgeting
January 6, 2023 -

I'm currently using Mint to budget. It works fine, but I feel like not using it anymore. You can't include everything, it doesn't sync well and I lost all the data I had in 2021 and early 2022 with my bank accounts. I'm grateful for the time I used it, but I think it's time, as 2023 begins, that I have the full control of my budget. I still feel like using Mint to track day to day, but I will do a monthly import of my expenses in a Google Sheet instead.

Can you suggest a great template? I know it's not complicated to create, but I'm not very good with this tool to custom it.

Thanks!

January 2, 2023 -

Hello lovely ladies,

I see people posting here a bit asking for help with budgeting (a struggle I think many of us can relate to!), so I thought I would post my method for staying on track.

I made this spreadsheet template to help me keep track of my spending and it has helped SO MUCH, so I decided I would spiff it up and post it here on the off-chance that it might help someone else out as well. (Not an ad! Free for everyone to use and share!)

There is an info sheet, as well as the template and then an example. If you have any questions at all don't hesitate to ask here or send me a DM!

Budget Template here!

I have time set aside each week to go through my finances for the 7 days prior and plug them into the spreadsheet. Anymore time than this and I find that I start to spend money that I don't have. I always felt so ashamed going over budget at the end of every month until I realized that I don't have to wait until the end of the month to log my purchases. I have an alarm in my calendar to do it every Sunday night and I've had a lot of success with this method. I hope it helps you out too!

Please feel free to share the link if you have people in your life that might find this beneficial.

May 10, 2022 -

Hey guys! Its that time again, I am updating the spreadsheet I made for budgeting and adding in new features. I'm terrible at sticking to a budget so I originally made a sheet that breaks it down so that I just have the ability to break it down to a daily manageable amount. Since then the sheet has grown into a project I update every year!

HERES WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE

I grew up very poor and had NO sense of what or even HOW to start budgeting. I was taught that money would disappear if I didn't use it, so I just USED it. Even now I still feel anxiety about money and can spend recklessly if I'm not careful. Another problem I faced is that I have ADHD, so impulse control can be hard, and it can also be hard to keep track of every purchase and focus on a bunch of aspects of a budget. This spreadsheet is made so you only focus on ONE number.

The sheet was set up with three goals in mind:

  1. that it be easy to use

  2. that it focuses on a daily budget that supports long term goals- instead of a long term budget that doesn't have daily support

  3. that it be a good starting place for people who have never saved before

So how does it work?

The main budget is divided into three core areas:

  • Income: You use this to fill in your income and choose to have a monthly, weekly, or bi-weekly pay cycle. If you are a worker who is tipped it includes an area where you can add tips, my suggestion is put in your minimum average income from tips- So for example, if you usually make 100 from tips a week, even if you get extra, try to program your budget around the 100 minimum average.

  • Expenses: There you can add your expenses. Utilities are bills that are for electricity, heat, phone, internet, or water. Bills are important expenses that you can't miss and are integral to living. Finally, expenses are other things you need to allocate money for- whether it be gas, lunch expenses, transportation- ect. Within your expenses there are TWO areas to which you need to pay attention:-Credit Card Payments: this is new to this year's sheet, use the tab below to fill out your information for up to three credit cards. Decide whether to pay the minimum payment OR choose an amount to pay. The tab will allow you to see how much you're paying and how much interest you're accruing. Once you have filled it out, your budget will adjust accordingly.-Big Purchase: Use this tab to create a budget for a large purchase, and adjust your budget easily and automatically to finance this purchase!

  • Budget summary: Finally the most important part of this sheet is the budget summary- Here you will see just how much you can spend. This money is shown in three ways, the lump monthly sum, a weekly amount, or a daily amount. As long as you don't go over that number, you will have enough money for the rest of your budget. It will also feature a breakdown of what your budget it, where your money is going, and what your income VS spending is!

SO WHATS NEW THIS YEAR ?

  • Themes! so far I had kept it a pastel paradise as I like those colors, but now you can easily change the themes on the sheet and pick one that suits you better.

  • Loan calculations, I wanted o see if I could get a house and needed an interest calculator- so I built one. P.S. I can't afford a house and likely never will.

  • Bi-weekly and Bi-Monthly options for income! it took forever but I did it! if you get paid every two weeks, its bi weekly. Two times a month, it's bi-monthly.

  • Paid? option to mark bills that have been paid each month.

  • Am I over budget??? an area to track daily spending and see if you're following your budget. you can manually input data, but you can also use an add-on like BudgetSheets to automatically import the bank data and then track it that way

and FINALLY

HERES THE LINK

NOTE: All Images in the spreadsheet are from vecteezy

FAQ:-How do I change it to USD/EU/CAN/AU currency? This is a google setting in sheets, go to the 123 setting and change it there!

-What is the difference between bi weekly and bi monthly?Bi-weekly is calculated based on 52 weeks in a year, Bi monthly is paid twice a month- there is aa small but statistically significant difference between those calculations!

- The link won't work!?tell me! the sheet is usually rate limited at some point so I need to generate a new link!

- I don't have google.....Here is the link to the public doc

That said it is made to use with sheets and will break if used in Excel. the original was made with accessibility and ease of use in mind- that meant i did want ppl to need to install extra software or need to pay for excel to use it. Due to this, it was made on sheets and some of the functions it uses are available only in google sheets. this is public BUT know it will Break and you will have to fix it.

- my Monthly/wekely/bimonthly/biweekly look different from each other? what gives?
Weekly payout and monthly payouts are calculated differently! if you make 100 a week it's not the same as making 400 a month! each calculation is made based on their specific circumstances. One day i wanna add Hourly but thats a WHOLE other can o worms.

r/googlesheets on Reddit: How to make Monthly Budget Sheet (default Google Sheets Template) only show the current month?
August 16, 2025 -

TLDR: Can someone help me apply a filter for only the current month (only august, only sep, etc) and have it be reflected in the summary? (Link to the budget sheet provided below) (Currently the summary doesn't differentiate between different months, and unfortunately shows a budget summary of EVERYTHING I've input. This doesn't change even if I filter any of the tables. Also even if I filter the table using the "date is: past month" filter, it filters it by the past 30 days, not by the current month)

FULL DESCRIPTION: There is a monthly budget sheet template on google sheets that doesn't really budget per month. So if I put in expenses or income for multiple months in the same sheet, it won't differentiate between the different months. To try and figure out how to sort the summary sheet based on the current month I've made a drop-down (picture attached below), but I'm not sure if that's actually gonna work, cuz then I would have to include the year, cuz once the next August (August 2026) comes, I don't want to see the previous August's data (August 2025).

I know I could simply copy the file over every month, but I want to access all my information on one sheet rather than multiple.

I've separated the expenses and income tables into different sheets (picture attached below) to be able to sort each table separately. The column sorting already has a built-in "sort by month" feature.

I've attached my modified monthly budget sheet below. I'd really appreciate any help!

I've tried attaching screenshots, but it won't let me :( . Here's a link to 3 screenshots of things I have referenced in this post: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1IhIGwUI7cH4G-Mhph2UFQcJm6qqE1qmI?usp=sharing

r/budget on Reddit: Free Google Spreadsheet template with auto-categorization for manual tracking only
August 9, 2024 -

Hey trackers,

I built a Google Spreadsheet template that you can use to track cashflow (expense/income), the uniqueness of this template is that it can auto categorize the transactions you input (see attached demo).

Here is the template to copy from: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/1/d/1XnR2dOa0qkCQvhUrRdNRkS9ggEWNYSQ7Tz3jaBBnjWo/copy

The auto-category is achieved by "Apps Script", code is included in the template, but template copy will not carry the action trigger over so that it can work automatically when you edit the sheet. Please follow the Setup Instructions sheet in the template to add your own trigger.

quick show - auto category when input expense

Enjoy this auto-categorization sheet, hope it's useful to folks who use Spreadsheet to track expenses!

Recently I have been seeing monthly budget planners trending on different social media platforms and noticed the creators were charging for them. Since I am a data analyst by trade I took the time to reverse-engineer a few of them and put my spin on them. I wanted to provide it to everyone for free, so they can all have access to budget their finances without spending money. If you feel like it is worth paying for I will leave my Paypal for tips, but it is not necessary.

Monthly Budget Planner

How to Use:

  1. File > Make a copy

  2. Adjust Month and Year from the dropdown

  3. Add "Income" information (Include the word"Paycheck" in the description")

  4. Add "Monthly Due Date" information

  5. Everything else will auto-populate and calculate automatically

Hey guys!

Just found this interesting group and wanted to share some of my experiences with personal finance and how Google Sheets helped me.

Since 2020 I have been actively tracking my finances. I started with a very basic excel sheet. Now this has grown into a "more advanced" google sheet. I update it every year and now I also started to share it with my friends and family.

This year I've decided I want to update it based on a wider feedback. This is why I am writing this post in hope of finding some fellow personal-finance-tracking enthusiasts to help me out with this project.

Down bellow in the comments you can access my Google Sheet template, you can also use it for yourself, but most of all I would like to invite you to send me your feedback, opinion and other experience you have with finance tracking in my new WhatsApp group I created.

Not sure if I can post any link, but I will try to add them in the comments.

In search of Free Google Sheets template for personal finance and purchases

I’m looking for a finance tracker or a template that can be used with Google Sheets and is free; either if someone has a template from somewhere or one from thegoodoc which has too many that I can’t find the one I need. The tracker/template has to be able to show all of my various bank accounts and track the income that’s generated/transferred into them along with any money that’s withdrawn or paid out to people from Venmo or etc. I also would like to be able to track all of my purchases and expenses and be able to categorize them such as dog stuff, bills, things bought for the house, eating out, groceries, etc. Listing this out means that my monthly finances are all going to be variable in nature but would like something where I can track either by day or by week due to my wife and I getting paid weekly which is a blessing but a curse at the same time. I would also like to have a graph or chart of some kind that keeps track of money in vs money out along with which categories the money is being spent on so that way I can get a better insight to my wife and I’s spending habits and can cut back where we need to. Plus I don’t mind manually entering the data in as it allows me to really know my finances more and more.

TLDR: In search of FREE personal finance Google Sheets or template that tracks bank accounts and purchases and money going in vs out along with being able to categorize it and then visually see it in a chart or graph. Data entry can be manual and preferred to be manual.
