March 24, 2025What are the drawbacks of using google sites? Why shouldn't a small business use it?
Apparently, lots of scams and malware get hosted there, and some social media platforms filter Google Sites links because of that. This may have changed over the last year, but I recall reddit being one such platform. On a sub I help run, those links would get spamfiltered so hard that I as a moderator wasn't allowed to approve them. When I tried, the site would instantly remove the links again a nanosecond later. Google Sites doesn't have widgets outside of its Google apps options, but you can add any outside option with an embed code. Look for an Embed or < > option for the widget. Note: The embed feature in Google Sites uses only HTML code.

I have been looking for a cheap alternative to our current website (using Wix) which is only co-owned by our organisation (a start up housing co-op with virtually no budget currently) as someone else set it up for us but didn't seem to fully understand what they were doing. We use Google docs and sheets for all our documentation and email so that makes sense but I have seen a lot of fundamental issues that have required people to take their sites elsewhere.
What is the general user experience like?

I find Google sites can quickly dissolve into ugliness if someone without a design eye starts getting creative. If you stick to a simple style, it's the easiest thing going. Here's my club site I work on the most: https://www.splitrockoutdoors.ca/
