Even when there are options for you to create the free website, you still have to invest your time to build it up the way you like, and eventually hit the pay wall later when you need more feature. When doing business, the cost for building a website is inevitable. Just the matter of time. In your case, the website needs to have two primary functions: booking and online payment. That goes beyond the basic website and you need someone more professional to take care of them. Those features will definitely cost a ton of time configuring and debugging when it comes into live. Edit: I am not looking to hire anyone! While slow I can & have done it myself.
I have had my Google Site for a few years now and want to upgrade it to a site I can do more with it as I find Google Sites super basic!
I train dogs professionally, so this website will be used to book my services.
I want to be able to book in client phone consults and the option for people to pay for their program if they decide to impulse buy.
While I am absolutely no web designer I have used WordPress and built a site on there before having to completely restart when I built my Google Site! I just fumble through while watching YouTube tutorials😂
My domain has been moved to squarespace and was considering building one with them, but then started reading some threads.
Can I please have some user friendly options to look into. Bonus if it’s a free site as I have not been used to including that into my budget in quite sometime now.

Hey, congrats on starting your business! Honestly, it depends on what you’re looking for. When I started my startup, I created the website using the Slides website builder from Designmodo. Also, for another portfolio website, I used the Siter website builder. Both platforms are website builders, but they differ in how you build the website. I recommend trying both to see which one works best for you.

Hi, I want to know how to go about creating a website for my business. I want to know what is the best option for my money, whether I should hire someone to do it, and how to find a good website creator that won’t scam me. Thanks!
edit for more context: I haven’t fully launched my business yet, just have the paperwork done and trying to finishing up all the elements I need (including a website). I sell baked goods, and want to sell locally as well as online. At first, I want to sell locally to build my presence, but want to have a website for preorders before completely setting up everything needed for shipping orders, before eventually launching for e-commerce. I do have experience in CS (majoring in it) but don’t have much experience in web development specifically. Based on the comments so far, I’m probably leaning towards hiring a web developer, but I want to make sure the person I hire is knowledgeable and has my best interest in mind. I also have no idea which website builder is best for my business, there a lot of mixed views in the comments, so if I could get more information on that, that would be great. I want to have the best SEO possible, have a unique nice design, and overall maximize my users’ experience.

Without knowing your capacity for tech, its a difficult question. Design is important and content is even more important. You can find good copywriters and designers on Fiverr; so get your copy done and hand off to a designer. You can scan YT videos from people who have reviewed Fiverr gig-workers to find the best designers. If you wish to manage the site yourself (which you should) I suggest using platforms like Squarespace or Wix; that way you wont have to deal with hosting, security, plugins, updates, backups etc; which you will have to with Wordpress! I'd pick Squarespace over Wix because you can't change the site theme with Wix later down the line. They don't allow you to export your website either... in case things go awry. Have someone create it for you; then you can take it from there.

One comment mentioned paying $20 a year for domains. That’s way more than one person should be paying, unless you’re paying for multiple extensions (.com + .net, etc.) If you go this route, I cannot recommend enough that you buy your domain separately from your host provider (ex: dreamhost). For the following reasons: It’s cheaper (Namecheap if you catch a deal can be $8 or less the first year, and $12-13-ish every year after). You get WHOIS privacy protection included with that price. Most host providers charge a couple bucks extra for that. If you ever decide you don’t like dreamhost and want to move, your domain stays yours. You don’t have to go through the trouble of transferring the domain, which is both time and money saved. It’s an extra step that will save you a ton of headache down the line.

I've used Dreamhost since 2006 and love them. But I'm a nerd-lite and coded my own websites. They have a pretty easy WordPress install that you can use to do things like you would do with Google Sites, I think. Looks like Dreamhost is having a sale for what they're calling WordPress Basic. They do offer a solid 90-day money-back guarantee, so you could try them with little risk. Not trying to sway you one way or another since I've never used Google Sites. Hope this helps.
