r/k12sysadmin on Reddit: Problems with Youtube
February 2, 2023 -

So here's my problem: Within the last few weeks, Youtube has been randomly blocking videos with the message: "Video unavailable This video is restricted. Please check the Google Workspace administrator and/or the network administrator restrictions". Now this is different from the content filter that we can subvert by going into incognito. No matter what browser, computer, user, etc we use, it will always get blocked for both students and staff. Except for mine and a few other admins computers. The content of these videos is insanely varied. Spanish music videos, SOS training videos, kindergarten sing a longs, even students videos that just were uploaded to their personal page. NO OTHER PAGES ARE BLOCKED TOO. None. It's literally just YouTube and YouTube alone

Now we made sure that each OU we use on Google Workspace has age restrictions set for all, made sure that restricted mode is turned off for each, the firewall is not blocking it, our WiFi (Aruba central) doesn't have anything on it, there are no restrictions from JAMF, we don't have anything blocked through DNS (we even changed it to 8.8.8.8 and 4.2.2.2), our AD is putting the users in the right places, packet capture shows nothing, RTMP is golden. Other than having bits of skin on my keyboard from bashing my face into it, everything seems right.

I talked to Workspace support and they basically sent me the email attached after them "looking into my problem" for a week.

I'm at a loss of what to do, and it seems to be getting worse and spreading across district.

Youtube: "This video is restricted. Please check the Google Workspace..." - Web Browsing/Email and Other Internet Applications
September 7, 2025 - I'm not uninstalling and re-installing browsers because of an issue YouTube/Google slammed us with. I didn't bother re-starting as it didn't help that guy (maybe I'll try re-starting tonight). Another guy finally got it to work with: "I encountered this issue today for the first time & resolved it by manually changing my main/alternate DNS using 'DNS Benchmark'.. then ran "ipconfig /release" --> "ipconfig /renew" --> "ipconfig /flushdns" back to back through Command Prompt as administrator.

r/youtube on Reddit: Unable to turn off YouTube Restricted Mode even though I'm the network administrator
January 4, 2021 -

On both Chrome and Edge, I am permanently stuck in Restricted Mode when I view YouTube videos, even though I have flipped off Restricted Mode under my YouTube account. I get this message when I search for explicit music videos like Gimme More by Britney Spears:

Some results have been removed because Restricted Mode is enabled by your network administrator.

Other times, if I click on certain recommended political videos, the videos are unavailable and I get this message:

This video is restricted. Please check the Google Workspace administrator and/or the network administrator restrictions.

What I've tried so far that's failed:

  1. Logging out of my YouTube account and viewing videos as a user with no account

  2. Logging into a family member's YouTube account

  3. Using a family member’s Chrome account

  4. Using Chrome as a guest or with incognito mode

  5. Uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome

  6. Disabling all extensions in Chrome

  7. Turning off my McAfee firewall

  8. Deleting the registry paths for Google in the Windows Registry Editor--I deleted the paths under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE

  9. Removing my work account from my PC (although when I use my work computer, I don’t have these issues, ironically)

  10. Restarting my PC

  11. Resetting the Edge browser

I am absolutely stumped—I started having this problem about 6 weeks ago and I have scoured numerous forums, including this one, and nobody has an answer. There are a lot of people commiserating, but I have yet to find a solution that works for me.

I just have this problem on my personal computer and not my phone or work computer.
