I currently have two domains that use Google Workspace for free. They are super old and never made any money, and I think I remember switching them over to some sort of free plan many years ago. They have full Google Workspace access and I have 2 email addresses on each domain. I use Gmail to access them (but I can also access them using the Mail app on my iPhone).

I have a new domain (also not making any money) and I'd love to be able to link the domain to some sort of free Google Workspace account to use the workspace tools, but primarily so I can use the Gmail interface. I'd love for it to match the experience I have for my other domains.

QUESTION:

Is there a way to open a new Workspace account for free using Google Workspace? If so, what process is best to follow?

Not talking about forwarding emails from my crappy hosting provider, I'd like to have Google host the email address. Added access to Workspace tools would be a bonus.

I have 6 user accounts that I have been using with Google Workspace for over 10 years, but now Google is charging per user, and it is expensive. I have 4 kids and host a family domain. They also use Gmail, and I forward their family email to their Gmail account.

I'm looking for a good alternative, and I am afraid to host the mail server myself since email seems to be the biggest hack and the ability to get screwed if someone gets access to the email account and like Google security like 2mfa. But the cost now per month per user is not suitable. I did buy the domain through GoDaddy. Should I go back to them to host the email?

I got a website up and running and I can use the domain for emailing by setting it up in DirectAdmin. So I already set up the hosting.

I was wondering if it makes sense to use Google Workspace for email related tasks instead and if it’s worth the money.

I always recommend uncoupling the servers for the website from the email for my clients. I am set up as a referral partner for Google Workspace (gives them 10% off their first year and I get a small reward). My clients love it because it’s easy to use and I’m not their email help desk person. It’s also great at filtering out spam emails.

If email is critical for your day-to-day business, absolutely go for Google Workspace. If it's more of a convenience then the included email service should be fine. With most mass-market web hosting providers, your outgoing email will be lumped together with the typical contact form spam and forwarded emails that websites generate. Therefore there's a higher chance that an email would be mis-classified as spam or blocked. Deliverability is better with Google as they have much more advanced spam detection systems and more reputable sender IP.
