I can answer some, but not all of your queries. Your GW email will be like a normal Gmail account (I think that is what you meant by hosted) that can be accessed via the Gmail web client. It would work with Microsoft Outlook (including calendar and contacts) using a plug-in Google provides. With other email clients you can connect using IMAP as usual. For 2FA, GW supports text, email, the Google service on Android phones or Google Authenticator. Any domain will work as long as you are the owner - doesn't need to be hosted on Google domains. When setting up GW, you are asked to add a specific TXT entry on your domain to prove that you own the domain. Hope that helps somewhat and that somebody more knowledgeable can help with other queries. Answer from Californian20 on reddit.com

r/gsuite on Reddit: Google Workspace (Business) vs Personal Account
July 5, 2025 -

I have a GSuite Account (Business) that I use with a custom domain. Everything works well besides FitBit and Nest for Google Home stuff.

I don't want a personal account because I don't want a @gmail Adress and use my custom domain for mails. Forwarding as many suggest is not an option.

Is there a possibility to use Nest with my Gsuite Business Account? Or can I have a personal account where I can use my custom domain for googlemail (i really like the google web apps)

r/gsuite on Reddit: Google Workspace for personal use. Pros and Cons?
June 6, 2019 -

Hey guys, I wish you all a wonderful new year! I’m thinking of getting a Google Workspace account for personal use but I have some questions I’d like answered before I make the switch.

I’ve been thinking of getting a new mail account for a while now, my current Gmail address is pretty silly and unprofessional because I made it as a kid. I first planned on getting [email protected] but unfortunately this is not available (I’ll spare you the story behind that). I don’t like/want any alterations or alternatives. That’s why I started thinking of using my domain and, for example, [email protected].

I got a bunch of questions I didn’t find a (good) answer to, here they are:

What are the (extra) pros besides using my own domain?

What are the cons? For example; I know Workspace accounts can’t use Stadia nor Family Sharing. What are the limitations compared to a “normal” Google account?

Will my [email protected] mail address work the exact same way as a Gmail address? Will it use Gmail as “host” and will I be able to also use Gmail IMAP to use it with different email clients? (Or will it use my hosting server?)

Does YouTube Premium work with Workspace?

Can I use Google Home devices with Workspace?

What 2FA options does Workspace support?

My current domain isn’t in use anymore, but I’m still the owner. Do I have to register my domain with Google Domains too? And if not, is this recommended?

Any other things to keep in mind?

I’d love to hear any other information and experiences from other people that use Workspace as a personal account.

Thanks in advance for your help and information!

Gmail Comparison Between Personal and Business Edition (Google Workspace)
December 15, 2023 - Google Workspace gives your business the highest control over employee accounts. Personal Gmail is owned by the individual user, which means the company has no access rights to employees’ personal email accounts or their contents.

January 5, 2022 -

So I have been trying google workspace for a week now and honest the only difference I see from normal gmail account and google workspace is the whole administrative structure behind the scenes, resetting passwords, creating users, etc.

From the user perspective, only custom domain email account, and more storage space, everything is exactly the same. I don't see any ads on free google accounts either. I was expecting to see some ads on gmail boxes but nothing not even on mobile.

Am I missing something here?

Fair to say that google workspace is not worth for personal use only for business?

r/gsuite on Reddit: Which is better for personal use, Google Workspace or Google One?
July 26, 2022 -

I have two Google accounts:

  1. Google Workspace mainly for a custom email domain

  2. Google One for everything else but mainly just Photos

It's annoying to have two logins and also pay for two separate services so I was going to merge my Google One account into my Google Workspace. This would involve transferring GDrive, GPhotos and YouTube subscriptions from Google One to Google Workspace.

I've heard a lot of noise recently about people moving in the other direction (from Google Workspace to Google One) and so I'm wondering if I'm making a mistake? Are there benefits to Google One over Workspace?

Keen to get peoples thoughts on this. Thanks!

P.S: All of this would be so simple if Google One let you have a custom domain 🥲

r/gsuite on Reddit: Workspace vs Personal
June 1, 2020 -

Hi all! I'm a consultant with a longstanding personal gmail account. One of my clients has also provided me with an email attached to their organization, and it's hosted by Google Workspace. My laptop is my own, it has never been accessible to my client. I have no software installed by them or for them.

I open both my personal email and my work email (hosted by Google) on Chrome. I've noticed as of late that when my personal gmail is opening it says "Google Workspace". This makes me slightly concerned that I may be allowing access to my personal email as well.....I don't think so, and I have nothing to hide, but I don't need anyone having access to my email.

Can an admin on the workspace account see the contents of my personal email when both work and personal are open in Chrome? I checked where I'm signed in, and the only logins are clearly mine, but I still worry. Any help would be appreciated---many thanks.
