Hi! We just bought the Graco DLX Grad 5-in-1 Slim Car Seat from Costco for my 1yo. We removed the infant headrest and infant insert, but the instruction manual states that the seat insert must be used for rear facing until 40lbs. My 1yo is 18lbs.
See attached photos. The seat insert adds some cushion around my LO, which I like, but I’m confused by the big lip it leaves at around LO’s midback. She seems fine most of the time when riding in it, but gets fussy sometimes and I’m wondering if it’s because the car seat behind her back isn’t flush.
Did some googling and I saw a couple of places where it seems folks just removed all inserts for their babies/young toddlers.
I guess my question is what experiences others have had with this car seat and the inserts. I’m a stickler for following manuals, especially for car seats, but this particular instruction that the seat insert is required for rear facing until 40lbs really baffles me. It seems to fit much better when grouped with the infant inserts.

This is a brand new insert due to the side impact requirements. What you are seeing online is probably from the previous generation of seats where the inserts were optional. I’m wondering if perhaps you have the straps too high. They should be coming from at or below the shoulders, but I find that kids are most comfortable when they are at the lower end of what’s allowed, with the white plastic booster belt guide right above the shoulder. That would close the gap that you’re referring to.

Can you snap pics of the pages of the manual you’re looking at? And of the page at the beginning with all the lines pointing to parts of the seat, naming them? Unfortunately this manual version available online. I’ve been rolling past it in the Cosco aisle waiting for them to put out an updated demo seat, but no luck yet.

I crazy safety conscious and the crash test rating are good. I was orginally looking at the nuna pipa RX. But buy two of everything is adding up and the graco is more affordable. How easy is it to move from one car to the other? It doesn't seem to have base. If you havevit wat do you like and dislike about it?

No convertible seats have bases and aren’t meant to be installed/uninstalled across cars. Every time you take it out to put into the other you have to make sure it’s installed correctly, which is a PITA. I fully understand the extra expense (especially with twins) but it’s fully worth it to have seats dedicated to every car they’ll be in. With that out of the way, the 4ever DXL is so heavy and bulky. Also booster seats are super cheap once you get to that stage, so having the 4 way convertible is not worth the extra cost of the seat. 3 in one is just fine! We have the slim fit3 LX for my toddler and that’s a lot lighter, and smaller profile. Weight doesn’t matter too much unless you plan to travel with it on an airplane though. I plan on getting the extend to fit for my son (he’s a big chunky boy and I want to rear face as long as possible! And the rotating seat for my tiny little lady. No worries about her maxing the weight before she turns 4! Graco products are fantastic. I own so many between 3 kids that they really should sponsor me. You name it, I probably own it.

Where do you live. All car seats are tested to really strict standards. In Canada standards are more stringent than US making US crash ratings irrelevant because the seats are different. But all car seats are safe as long as they are installed correctly and fit your child and your véhicule, a 500$ seat is not safer than a 50$ one. Buckets seats and travel systems are a life saver for the first year. With twins there is a chance the babies may be smaller. Sure you can go convertible from birth but you’d need in each véhicule. If one véhicule is used les often you can buy a cheaper seat. Just as safe but less premium features like fancy connectors, locking mechanism, more padding, ect.

No, this stays in the car, as do all convertible seats. Graco does make bucket seats; Chicco (highly recommend!) and Britax also have great ones if you want to carry the infant while buckled up and click them in a base when you get to the car.
