April 2, 2024Looking to buy a spice grinder that can make powder/flour?
I didn’t have any suggestions until you mentioned your budget. Holy shit. The really really popular coffee grinder, the Mahlkonig EK43, was originally a spice grinder, apparently. Mahlkonig is a very reputable German company, and dominate in the high end coffee world. The Ek43 is a commercial grade grinder that I used to own, so I can attest to its power and quality, but a new one is about $3,000 USD. You probably don’t have to get a model that expensive. You could get a used one or a cheaper model from the same company. I would even consider a Bunn G series or Grindmaster for wayyy less money. Cheap home coffee grinders are basically just dull blenders with spinning blades that hack and chop up beans. Quality grinders use burrs to mill and crush beans — a feature you probably want for spices as well. My opinion is that you email Mahlkonig and ask if they have any spice mill attachments for their grinders. And go find a used Mahlkonig grinder for cheaper than $3,000 to put it in. I was in the same boat a few years ago when trying to get my efficiency consistent. I got the geared 3 roller from monster brewing and highly recommend. My friend had a non geared 2 or 3 roller from some other brand and it always got stuck or finicky so I wanted something that would reliably crush. The monster is a little bit more money but worth it. They give you a sizer (or whatever it is) and once I used that to get a 0.030 gap in the roller, I've had great efficiency. So definitely use something accurate to set up whatever you get.
