Apart from the obvious answer that competition is high, it might be because you're marketing yourself as a specialist in wholistic brand development. The target market for that sort of worker is a startup. But if you're applying to companies that already have an established brand, they're not gonna be attracted by somebody who can make them a new one. A lot of hiring managers are not going to look your portfolio and think: "Even though we don't need branding, she'll be able to handle this other stuff for us anyway because her portfolio is strong. Good design is made by good designers and her skills are transferrable to my needs." Instead, they'll choose a person who is already saying they specialize in the type of work they need. Every single piece in your portfolio is designed to reject almost every single employer for a full-time graphic design job that exists, and you don’t seem to realize that, which is the main concern for me. There is almost no full-time employment for people who work on fringy, edgy, experimental, brutalist, low-fi design. I would imagine only by working in isolated environment like New York City or similar could someone somehow be fooled into thinking this is a viable career path. It is not. When I see a portfolio like this, I wonder how someone could get to this point and not be aware of what they are doing. You could apply for the next 10 years to 1000 jobs a day and potentially not get hired every single time. I will always pick someone else who has a more commercial style. I’m not trying to be cruel to you just for the hell of it. I want you to consider rebuilding your approach from the ground up and throwing out every single piece you have created. Start over. Spend the next six months to a year researching portfolios of people who work full-time as designers. Ignore everything that looks like anything you have already done. Those people are probably doing work for cheap or free or for themselves or their friends’ music or experimental art or film projects. That does not count when you’re looking for a full-time employment. Most people will not be this direct to you, and will give you some form of encouragement that will ultimately lead you to continue the path you’re on, which will not get you anywhere. Ignore them.
