Symptoms for years
I think that thyroid issues are often overlooked. I’ve seen many people suspect thyroid issues but never received a diagnosis for years later. I’ll also add that last year I started having severe hyperthyroidism symptoms and my levels were normal when we first checked. KNOWING I have Graves’ and a history of hyperthyroidism. We then became concerned that something was wrong with my heart due to the palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, high heart rate, etc. A month later, my symptoms become entirely debilitating, my HR would peak 190, I couldn’t walk my dogs due to being so out of breath and the tremors were so severe in my legs I could barely stand, and then my thyroid became so enlarged it was visibly sticking out. SO I called my doctor to recheck my levels and they were outrageous! That experience has really encouraged me to tell people to get multiple blood tests if they suspect thyroid issues, especially whenever their symptoms are most severe. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if you’ve been experiencing symptoms from Graves’ and hyperthyroidism before now and they’ve just now caught the abnormal labs to confirm a diagnosis. Antithyroid meds help get your levels normal and hopefully reduce your symptoms. The most symptom relief for me has come from my total thyroidectomy last year, really life changing. My levels were always up and down but even with normal levels, I still felt so unwell and had so many uncomfortable symptoms. It seems like everyone’s experience is different! More on reddit.com
What age did your symptoms start?
I was a baby Graves. Diagnosed at 12 years old but had symptoms as early as 9 or 10. Honestly probably even earlier than that but it was mostly dismissed as "probably ADHD" or even an eating disorder. (I would binge eat but lose weight. People thought I was some young bulimic apparently.)
