YMMV, but in my field (political science), it is very rare for women to wear actual suits. Most women/women-presenting conference attire is a nice pair of pants, and a top. Some people wear flowy tops (long or short sleeve), other folks do a top and blazer. But rarely does the blazer actually match the bottoms. I'd say it's probably more cost effective to spend your money on a couple of pairs of nice pants and some tops that you can mix and match. From talking to colleagues in other social science fields, this seems to be the norm. Exceptions are business and some economics fields. But usually when we see someone in a suit, it's a great indicator that they are a grad student! I had a pants suit for my first conference and felt incredibly uncomfortable and out of place. And even on grad visits, I think showing up in a suit (that matched) would be a bit over the top. So unless you are really tied to the idea of the suit, I'd invest in a variety of things. It'll help you blend in more, and the mix and match nature will mean you get many more outfit options out of your pieces! ETA: to actually try to be helpful, here are brands of dress clothes that I have found comfortable and durable as a plus-size person: Sky is Blue (their blazers are fantastic, and now half my department owns them!); Liverpool London (dress pants); Wildfang (button-down shirts in fun patterns); Apt. 9 (Kohl's carries their tops and bottoms); Democracy (nice jeans); Tom Boy Toes (excellent men's-style loafers made for women). It’s for a wedding but each person in the wedding party has claimed a different color, mine being sage green. Indochino seems a bit expensive, but I think I didn’t have a good idea of what the cost might be going in. That Old Navy option looks promising, thank you! I’ve seen mixed things about Studio Suits, so I wasn’t sure if I should look into them further. Does anyone happen to have experience with them?
