Thoughts on using the grid method to draw realistically
Grid method has another name, that you might've not heard of - Zeroth point Perspective. With First, Second, Third, Fourth and .... Nth Perspective it's a tool to draw. They are invented by Brunelleschi . Reason why using such method could hinder one skill is if person relies onto it, instead of using it. It's matter of comfort, not skill. Similar to training wheels on a bike. Gradual transition to freehand drawing is using grid method (0 perspective) to train your eye to follow up measurements and proportions. So when you transition to first perspective you have that covered and to slowly transition from 2D excercizes ( 0th and 1st) to line based 3d excercizes (2nd, 3rd and fourth) and eventually to curvilinear perspective (5th, 6th and so on). Over depending on a tool is a hindrance of its own. Because tools are made to help you not confide you. More on reddit.com

June 5, 2025 - I’m really more interested in using the grid method to show students how to really LOOK at and image and analyse it carefully in order to capture as much detail in their drawing as possible. The grid gives students reference points for every part of the image and allows them to judge each element in relation to the boxes.

r/ArtistLounge on Reddit: Thoughts on using the grid method to draw realistically
October 13, 2022 -

I've recently started trying to draw realistically, and so far, I've primarily used the grid method, and when I don't, my drawings do not have good proportions, no matter how hard I try. I read that using the grid method could hinder your drawing skills in the long run, but I was wondering if I could use the grid method now, and gradually transition over to freehand drawing when I've drawn more. Do you think that could work? Thanks.

Idk my perspective is that there are 2 main types of drawings that an artist will do. One type of drawing is one that you want to show off, and the other type is the one that you learn from. There's for sure crossover between them but I think understanding this is pretty valuable. For the stuff you want to show off, which could be stuff you hang on a wall, stuff for clients, etc, go use every tool available to you. Trace poses, use references, use ai image generation, use the grid method, whatever, all of it is fair play as long as you are not just straight up plagiarizing someone else's work. If you look at pro artists many of them use techniques that a lot of people who are not pro artists would consider cheating. However, the second type of drawing is also super important, that is the type of drawing you do to deliberately get better at art. This stuff can be messy, ugly, weird, heck you may even just straight up throw out tons of these pieces. This is where you draw from reference, where you explore value, tone, shape design, composition, materials and techniques. Some of these studies might turn out to be show-off worthy but definitely not all of them. So coming back to your question, if you want to draw stuff and immediately be able to show it off, go use the grid method and don't feel bad about it. If you want to rely less on that, and if you want to add more life to your work, go do those same pieces without a grid. If you want a little homework assignment that you can do right now, go pick a photograph you want to study, and draw what you see, after you are done, do the same piece again, repeat this about 8 times and by the end you will for sure improve. These pieces don't have to be big or super detailed, just whatever you can do in ideally like 15 mins, but totally fine if you want to spend an hour or 2 on each of these. Anywho, if you really want to get good at art, you just gotta do more of it, you will learn more with every line you make.

How to Use Grid Drawing to Improve Your Accuracy - Draw Paint Academy
March 3, 2023 - I start by measuring the length and width of the canvas and calculating where each line of the grid will need to go (if you are placing a three-by-three grid, then divide the length and width by three to get your key measurements). I then place a mark where the lines need to go. Make sure they are evenly spaced across the sides. Finally, once all the marks are in place, I complete the lines using a ruler or anything with a long, straight edge. You might need another person to help with this if you are painting on a large canvas (one person to hold the ruler in place and another to draw the lines).

Now you will draw a grid that is proportional to the grid on your photo on your drawing surface. For example, if your photo is 8" by 8" and you have made a grid made of inch squares, your drawing paper could be 8" by 8", 16" by 16", 24" by 24" and so on. If you choose to work on 16" by 16" paper, your grid squares will need to be 2", since 2" is 2 times larger than 1 inch.
