guardian is good enough if you mainly just need routine cleanings, xrays, & exams. if you need dentures, bridges, or any procedures that will cover for tooth/teeth extracted, please take note that there is a missing tooth clause imposed. Missing tooth clause (MTC) basically means that any procedures that will performed on tooth/teeth extracted PRIOR to having the insurance will NOT be covered by the insurance. In most states, the MTC is permanent. In some states, like New York, it’s for 12 months. If you need insurance because you want to either have a crown, denture, inlays, onlays, bridges, & implants to be replaced, take note that Guardian has a replacement clause of 10 yrs & unusable. With implant coverage, there’s also a cap or implant lifetime maximum. For e.g. some Guardian dental plans have implant coverage of $1000. That would mean no matter how long you become a member of Guardian, the maximum allowable coverage for implants & implant related services would be $1000 dollars. Another usual mistake that people also make when they purchase dental plans, they would also get services right away. With dental PPO plans, there is always going to be Waiting Periods. Waiting periods are common with most dental insurances. Waiting periods need to be satisfied in order for services that will fall under certain categories to get covered. You need to have the insurance for certain duration of time before you’ll get covered. Listed below are examples: • Preventive services (Exams, Xrays, & Regular Cleanings/Prophylaxis) usually does not have waiting periods. • Basic services (fillings, simple extractions) may or may not have a 6 month waiting period. • Major services (Periodontics [Deep Cleanings], Endodontics [Root Canal Treatments or related services, Oral Surgery, Surgical Extractions, Crowns, Dentures, Onlays, Inlays, Bridges, Implants) have a 12 month waiting period. Before purchasing dental insurances, please always contact their customer service. Do not be scared to ask questions. Customer service representatives love it when you contact and ask them questions about the coverage before you purchase the insurance. You have to lengthen your patience, and don’t fight with the customer service rep because they are there to help you. Also before you get services, especially for those that will cost you a lot, please (for the love of God) ask your dental providers to submit a PREAUTHORIZATION for the services they are recommending for you to get. When a preauthorization gets completely processed, you will know whether the procedure/s will be covered or not, how much will be your out of pocket expense once the services are performed, and how much your insurance will pay. Requesting for a preauthorization to be submitted is a good practice. Do not get the service until the preauthorization is completely processed. Contact the insurance directly, and the dental provider’s office. Please be kind and patient with your customer service rep. If you’re not satisfied with the service, ask for another rep, or request for an appointment to be made with an escalation rep or supervisor.
