The UK’s ambitious commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 81% must be “the starting point, not the finish line”, commentators have said. The commitment was officially delivered to Cop29 in a statement by Keir Starmer this afternoon.

November 18, 2024 - The Australian climate change and energy minister Chris Bowen has spoken about the high degree of difficulty of reaching an agreement before the week is out, writes Adam Morton, Guardian Australia’s climate and environment editor. Bowen has been asked by the Cop29 president to co-chair with Egyptian minister Yasmine Fouad the negotiations on what is known as the “new collective quantified goal on climate finance”. A deal on finance for the poor and vulnerable is the core focus at Cop29, and campaigners have expressed frustration at the slow progress.
