Trade-In Trade-Up | Guitar Center
Unfortunately, Guitar Center does not buy gear without an in-hand inspection at one of our locations. ... Once you’re at the store, an associate will evaluate your gear and assess the item(s) based on condition of the piece, historical sales data, market desirability and current stock levels. If we make an offer and you accept it, we’ll pay for your gear same-day. Can I trade in my used or vintage gear for something else?

r/Guitar on Reddit: Anyone go through the Guitar Center trade-in process?
September 8, 2011 -

I've been trying to sell a tube head for months through craigslist. I get tones of scam emails asking to send checks and have some pickup service, and only a single serious buyer who ended up backing out. Im curious if anyone has used GC's trade-in service and how good it is? I only ask because the closed GC is a couple hours away and my car gets bad mileage and has no A/C. If I'm going to take the time to do it, I want it to be worth the journey

The head went for like $700 new and ive been asking $250 for it. Any ideas how GC will calculate the value? Will they give you cash or just store credit? How selective are they for what they take? I did check their site but it really only says you'll get an extra 10% off if you put the credit towards something new, and that they do take power amps. If there's any GC employees that could give an estimate, its a B52 ST100A in decent condition with no bad tubes.

EDIT: if anyone knows of other good music-oriented classified sites besides craigslist, let me know!

[GEAR] Guitar Center/ Sam ash: Trade in Value
GC has a system that tracks prices and will spit out an offer for the employee on popular items. For things that aren't auto generated an employee will search around online for a price and give you 50-60% of that price depending on condition. You will get a discount on a new purchase if you trade in something of any value so it can be useful even if they low ball you. For example, you could get a 10% discount on a $3000 Gibson for selling them a pedal for $5. Places like Sam Ash and Guitar Center have to resell the item you sell them. That means they are never going to give you full market value for your items. If you want full value for your items you need to sell them yourself. More on reddit.com

Anyone go through the Guitar Center trade-in process?

I've done it before. It's an ok solution for getting rid of gear that you can't move on CL.

Here's the thing--you should get between 40-60% of new price for your gear IF it's fairly popular and they think they can sell it for a good price in a reasonable amount of time.

For instance, I traded in a like-new Peavey Valveking 100 head and got almost nothing for it. They already had 2 used ones in that store, and they hadn't moved them very quickly.

In contrast, I received $400 or so for a Phantom Guitarworks Teardrop guitar (which I paid $350 for used), because it was in great shape, well-built, and somewhat of a rarity.

Vintage gear tends to do ok too--you may have to wait a bit if you're on the East Coast and show up in the morning, because they need to check with their vintage appraisal team located in CA.

The problem with your B-52 is that it's not a particularly popular amp. They've had plenty of durability/QC issues in the past, and don't have a particularly good reputation. If I was to venture a guess, you'd likely get around $150 for it (possibly more, if they feel generous), based on what I'm seeing used ones priced at on the web (the appear to be going for around $230 or so).

In my experience, they look up current used listings for the item and give you 60% of that average. More on reddit.com

[QUESTION] Is trading in a guitar at guitar center worth it if I’m getting a new one there?
Monetarily, no it absolutely isn't. But it depends what your priority is, if you have the cash to spend and just want to get rid of this thing and get the new thing then it might be, is your time worth more than the difference in money? If you can afford to spend $350 on a new guitar without selling the Seagull then go and buy your new guitar and sell your old one elsewhere, if not and you really want to get this done ASAP do the trade in. Guitar Center trade in - how do they calculate value? | My Les Paul Forum
June 5, 2019 - I always assumed GC had some kind of database to value a trade in, but on a recent trip guess what they used? Reverb.com and 60% of the average value they might find there. I questioned the store rep about this a bit and he said that is all they really use. This ended up doubling what I expected...

How to Trade-In at Guitar Center - the UGLY TRUTH | TalkBass.com
December 27, 2011 - Think again... they don't need youR business..... they want it, they DO value it, but they dont need it.... Here's some tips to make your trade-in experience at GC easier. 1) Do some research. See what your EXACT instrument or amplifier is selling for used. Look at COMPLETED listings on Ebay... not what they're ASKING for the unit... but what it actually SOLD for.... pay attention to shipping.... if your guitar sold for $200 but $45 of that was shipping, your guitar is worth $165, not $200.

When is it a good idea to take used gear to Guitar Center | The Gear Forum
August 15, 2024 - What I'll usually do if I'm considering taking something in to GC is just list somewhere in between that 40% point and what the market used price is. Usually works out, quick sale happens, a real person gets a good deal, and you get slightly less effed in the A than taking it to guitar center But a large grouping of pedals you dont want might be worthwhile to just take it in.
