In all cases, acids yield protons ( or hydronium ions H3O+) and bases yield OH- (hydroxide) ions in aqueous solutions.

The H3O+ ion is considered to be the same as the H+ ion as it is the H+ ion joined to a water molecule. The proton cannot exist in aqueous solution, due to its positive charge it is attracted to the electrons on water molecules and the symbol H3O+ is used to represent this transfer.

The equation can be written as:

H+ + H2O(l) โ†’ H3O+(aq).

This is hydrolysis as it is involving water as a reactant.

Consider the first equation in the question , the ionisation equation of water:

The H3O+ ion concentration in pure water at 25ยฐ C is 10^-7 dm^-3. This can be written as:

where the symbol [ ] means the "molarity of" (units in moles dm^-3).

The number of H3O+ and OH- ions formed by the ionisation of pure water must be equal ( from the equation):

[H3O+] = [OH-] = 10^-7).

This shows that pure water is neither acidic or basic, it is neutral. The product of [H3O+] = [OH-] is the ionic product of water.

[H3O+][OH-]=10^-7 ร— 10^-7 = 10^-14

shows that in aqueous (water) solutions, whether acidic, basic or neutral, the product of the ion concentrations equals 10^-14.

Acidic solutions contain more H3O+ ions than OH- ions. For basic solutions it is the reverse.

Therefore a water solution is : Neutral when [H3O+]= 10^-7. Acidic when [H3O+] > 10^-7. Basic when [H3O+] < 10^-7.

I have been reading chemistry books and learned about +\- cations and anions and it got me thinking about water or H2O and I realized by using a positive charged oxygen you would have to bond 3 hydrogen to get 8 electrons. I looked into it and it is called hydronium but I saw its made from (H+)+H2O is it the same chemical? Also how does one H+ make the oxygen positive? I get they can bond because the H+ has zero electrons but how is the charge transferred? Thanks I was just curious.

That nomenclature isnโ€™t there to indicate which species carries the charge. Think of it like (H3O)+ instead of H3(O+). The positive charge is overall not for any atom/element in particular.

Hey there! The hydronium ion is a chemical species that appears when you have acid aqueous solutions. It can actually form even more complex structures, such as H9O4+ , for example. Depending on the acid-base theory you use to describe this kind of phenomena, you can say that acids protonate substances, that is, they give other substances a H+ nucleus (which is just a proton, since hydrogen only has one electron). The thing is: the species that will accept said hydrogen nucleus must have the capacity to form a chemical bond with that H+ . Bonds require the sharing of electrons between the orbitals of the various atoms involved. However, when you are trying to protonate a molecule, the only electrons that are able to be shared with the H+ are the non-bonding electrons of the molecule, that is, those that do not partake in any bonds. In the H2O molecule, the only atom that has such non-bonding electrons is the oxygen atom: it has two lone pairs of electrons that are not being used to bond with the hydrogen atoms of the H2O molecule. One of these two pairs can be shared with the H+ , which has an empty orbitals. You can even simplify this further by thinking of this as the negative part of the water molecule, located on the oxygen, being attracted to the positive H+ cation (however, be aware that this is a very very very crude approximation). So, how does this make the oxygen positively charged? Well, rigorously speaking, the whole H3O+ is positively charged, but we can make the approximation that the oxygen is positively charged because it alone has 6 valence electrons, but now an electron pair is being donated to a positive entity. Bonding usually happens with pairs of electrons, one electron coming from each atom. Since the H+ does not have any electrons to share, the whole pair must come from the oxygen, which makes things appear as if that oxygen only had 5 valence electrons instead of the 6 it should have. Hence, the positive charge. I hope that explanation was clear enough! Be aware though, that reality is not only more complex than that, but also there are weird exceptions to everything in chemistry :)
