r/hackthebox on Reddit: Pricing for individuals?
October 19, 2025 -

Hello everyone,

I am looking for information about how much HTB would cost me, but I cannot find any information for individuals.

I have found out that you need two different subscriptions for HTB Lab and Academy if you want to use both. And that you can buy cubes as currency, but there is no information about the prices. I also can't find any information on the website about accepted payment methods. If I didn't know that HTB is a reputable provider, I would get strong scam vibes. I would be willing to sign a monthly or annual contract, but I need to know beforehand what it costs and how I pay for it. And no, I don't want to have to register somewhere first. That's pretty off-putting.

Could someone (perhaps from the HTB staff) help me out and make the prices and payment methods for individuals transparent? (And explain to me why this information is not easy to find anywhere on the website? What do you have to hide? Don't you want individuals as customers?)

Hack the Box Or TryHackMe is premium necessary for both?
TryHackMe (THM) is more noob friendly ... so if you are totally new to infosec then go for TryHackMe and do the free courses. If you have some basic understanding of computer use then go for HackTheBox (HTB). Important point to note is that HackTheBox has two version: The regular mode, which requires you to have understanding of hacking and the various tools being used. Basically this is where you practice. The Academy mode, which basically teaches you how to hack. You can do the entire tier 0 for free which will take a good months or so to do after that you may pay to do other courses. The difference between the THM and HTB: THM has hand holding approach while HTB teaches you as if you know how to properly use a PC. On free version THM will give you parts of a module for free while other lessons in the same module would require payment On free version of HTB you will get the basic understanding of hacking through the many free modules but you need to pay for intermediate to advance techniques. Hack The Box Courses or TryHackMe for beginners
Skip both and go do pwn.college it's specifically meant for new people and willl teach you all of the basics. It's also entirely free with no limits. AFTER that you should try hackthebox but have a game plan for exactly what you want to do like web or host exploitation. More on reddit.com

Is it worth it as a beginner?
Tryhackme is better for beginners I think. Vulnhub might be even harder than hackthebox. Take some paths and learn. After that you will understand basic things you need to do on HTB. More on reddit.com

r/hackthebox on Reddit: Hack the Box Or TryHackMe is premium necessary for both?
August 24, 2022 -

Hey, I am a student and do not have a budget required for premium. So my question is, which platform would cost me less if I want to start my learning? Also, I am relatively new to this field, so can you all please guide how to start learning and make a career in this field?

Qualification: Engineering student, C++, currently also exploring the field of competitive programming.

Any kind of help will be appreciated.

Start doing the free stuff at TryHackMe, the courses there are a great start as they are more handholding (some are plain CTF styles aswell.) If you have done alot and starting to feel more secure go for premium to access the other labs if you feel like it. Hack The box needs you to have core understanding of how to enumerate and exploit. It only gives you the IP and OS for the server. You could try the free one but i would go for the premium when you done TryHackMe and get the hang of the concepts. (Premium gives you access to all the boxes and will give you a private session when spun up).
