Hall pots were used in the Sega Dreamcast's controller, and now the Gulikit king kong pro 2 gamepad. They typically only have a small-ish range of rotation and aren't really designed for robotics applications though; you probably want an absolute magnetic encoder for a stewart platform eg AS5040,MA730GQ-Z or similar, or just a regular quadrature optical encoder if you don't mind needing a homing sequence at startup. Are you making something like this , or a bit smaller? Answer from triffid_hunter on reddit.com

Single-Turn Hall Effect Potentiometers | Buy Sensors at P3 America
Single-turn Hall Effect potentiometers are one of the most commonly used position-sensing technologies available today. They are engineered for systems that require endurance, accuracy and long mechanical life. If you need a cost-effective potentiometer for sustained use in harsh environments, a Hall Effect pot is a great option.

January 10, 2023 -
Hey so I'm trying to make a Stewart platform from old motors and seen somewhere that you could use Hall effect Potentiometers to get the position. But I have not been able to find what that actually is, like is it just a rotary encoder?
Thank you for the help!

It’s a sensor which uses the distance or orientation of a magnet to provide a voltage reference (or current loop) output. They are great for things that don’t move very far but need a precise measurement, and they are non contact sensors so there is nothing to wear out electrically and so are reliable. Potentiometers need a fairly large ‘travel’ to give a precise voltage reference, and of course wear down with repeated functions and give a comparatively noisy signal.

February 7, 2020 - No, all you need is a 5K linear potentiometer available just about anywhere. Something like this will do fine or you can get fancy and look for a 10 turn 5K linear pot. Whatever you choose just make sure you have a knob included. I know what a hall effect switch is and I know what a potentiometer is but I haven't a clue what a hall effect potentiometer is?

The multi-turn potentiometer solves measurement issues by adding functionality and measuring several axes in a single device. Conventional Hall Effect Potentiometers rely on magnetic fields for operation, making them unsuitable for application in non-magnetic environments.

Hall Effect Versus Potentiometer Desktop Controllers - Controllers
June 4, 2022 - Although hall effect joysticks offer many advantages over potentiometer controllers, they too have some downsides. For one, the available voltage supply will be a limiting factor. Hall effect controllers need a 5VDC whereas the potentiometer joysticks can work with a range of voltages.
