I'm wanting to do some Halloween decorating without breaking the bank. Our toddler loves Halloween, so I'm trying to go above and beyond for her.
My ideas so far are:
A giant cobweb strung between two trees out of white rope.
Some ghosts hanging from tree branches.
Gravestones in the yard made from painted scrap plywood.
I would love to hear ideas for relatively simple and cheap DIY decorations, interior and exterior. She especially loves pumpkins, and we'll have several scattered around, but pumpkin ideas would be especially appreciated.
Ok this is what Goths like me live for! Here's my best cheap Halloween tips: A burlap sack, some sticks, & old clothes make for a very creepy scarecrow. I like to add homemade fake blood made with red dye & sugar syrup. It stays gooey & attracts bugs which get stuck & add to the horror of the scarecrow. Twigs can be used to make lots of creepy Halloween stuff, depending on how frugal you want to be you could paint them black. Think Blair Witch Project or creepy Hoodoo symbols & witch runes. Draw a summoning circle in your driveway with sidewalk chalk. Use rope & chains from the garage to wrap porch beams or make doors look like they are secured to keep the monsters out (or in). Pumpkins & corn are autumn classics that can be used for food as well as vintage style jack o lanterns & other decorations. Try making jack o lantern out of turnips, squash, watermelon, & other produce. Boil some shrunken apple heads, they look great in a cider punch bowl. Old rusty farm equipment like scythes or bolt cutters can be found in junk piles & have serial killer vibes. I wouldn't recommend this if you have kids though because they are sharp & dangerous. You can form ghostly shapes with chicken wire, drape fabric over them, & cover it with spray starch to make cloth ghosts. Paper cutting is very cheap & easy. You could cut bats, witch hats, or whatever & make garlands. There's no end to what you can so with paper craft really. You can construct paintable decorations & costume heads/masks out of papier mache. Cover your furniture in white sheets to look like the attic in a haunted house. Use candles (or fake candles if you have kids or pets). I like having candlelight only in the bathrooms since it's otherwise difficult to make them look spooky. Keep the lights low & turn dimmer switches all the way down. Try switching your light bulbs out for red ones, they should keep for a long time since they only get used during parties. Make a wicker Man or straw goat head & set it up in the yard like a sacrifice. If you can have bonfires on your property burn it at midnight. Find old wedding dresses, Halloween costumes & suits at Goodwill & stuff them with some sort of wadding so they stand upright. Put these headless horrors in unexpected places like around corners, behind doors, etc. Look for animal bones & body parts in the woods & clean them up for indoor use, or leave them juicy & hang them from the trees.
