I think Lin assumes his audience is somewhat familiar with the story coming in, or at least a few of the characters from standard US education. If you never had that, then it would be tough to place some of the events. The first act mainly takes place during the American Revolution, an event that most US audiences are somewhat familiar with. George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr are people we learned about in history class. The language in Hamilton can often have dual meanings, which I could also see being tough for a non native speaker. LMM will often use the same word twice in quick succession with 2 different meanings, which would be tough to pick up on. For example, in the opening song, “the ten dollar founding father without a father……” the first part references the fact that Hamilton is on the US $10 bill, and “founding father” is a common term for the men that founded the United States. The 2nd use of “father” is literal, in that Hamilton was an orphan and didn’t have a father to look up to. Things like that are strewn throughout the musical. The wordplay is part of what makes it a masterpiece, but could also make it difficult to understand. More on reddit.com
