3 weeks ago - According to one theory, Shakespeare's main source may be an earlier play—now lost—known today as the Ur-Hamlet. Possibly written by Thomas Kyd or by Shakespeare, the Ur-Hamlet would have existed by 1589, and would have incorporated a ghost. Shakespeare's company, the Chamberlain's Men, ...

Hamilton and Shakespeare
December 9, 2016 - Hamilton, Laurens, Lafayette, and Mulligan all use hip hop and rap to bond, and immediately establish a common sound. But that common sound also leaves Burr out. Not in an upper class/lower class way, but in a way that very distinctly says: “You don’t think like us.” Which leaves Burr with the choice to either try and speak their language or not. Shakespeare does the exact same thing.

What would Shakespeare think of Hamilton? - Quora
Answer (1 of 3): Sadly, probably not a great deal. First, I can see historical characters learning to like certain kinds of modern, popular music. Some of the Beatles, perhaps, or even a few Beach Boys tunes, because of the amount of harmony would (in time) be reasonable to a person from the Ren...

How “Hamilton” is like a Shakespearean History Play
July 12, 2020 - Hamilton went from being an immigrant, to a soldier, to a pioneer in American law, government, and finance and the musical reflects his struggle to achieve his dreams through each stage of his life.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and William Shakespeare – William Hogeland
March 25, 2024 - Martha C. Nussbaum, the scholar of philosophy, law, and government, did so too, in response (sort of) to my argument that Nussbaum’s uncritical participation in emphasizing the American founders’ reading and thinking, at the expense of examining their action, leads ironically yet ineluctably to acceptance and even celebration, in her Boston Review essay “Hamilton’s Choice,” of the hagiographic history that served as inspiration for the musical. This Miranda-Shakespeare comparison is a natural hook when Miranda’s fans are defending the musical against what they take to be criticism of the show’s historical inaccuracy.

"Hamilton" and Shakespeare's Histories | Medium
July 22, 2020 - Henry V is so perfect because he is Shakespeare’s example of how an ideal ruler should act. Henry is a model for kingly behavior just as Richard is an example of what not to do. And the scene in which the British and Irish soldiers fight together depicts a sixteenth-century Englishman’s ideal of cooperation between Ireland and the future constituent nations of the UK. “Hamilton” uses history in similar ways.

November 16, 2017 - Lin-Manuel Miranda, one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed playwrights of our era, calls his blockbuster hit musical Hamilton a “love letter to both hip-hop and musical theater.” While it’s well known that Miranda was strongly influenced by rap and hip-hop legends, he also drew inspiration from the original champion of storytelling through verse— William Shakespeare.
