r/hamiltonmusical on Reddit: Question about length compared to the album
November 13, 2018 -
I am yet to see Hamilton mainly because I’m on the other side of the world.
I just have a question about the length of the musical. The website says it goes for 2 hours, 45 minutes including a 20 minute interval. I take to mean 2 hours 25 minutes of actual show.
The full album goes for 2 hours 23 minutes.
Does that mean there is only a combined 2 minutes of talking between the songs? The musicals ive seen have had at least a minute between each song in general.
Because of the style of music in Hamilton can they get away without the usual breaks between the songs?

Yes, there is little to no dialogue in the musical outside the songs, as all the story is told within the songs themselves. One major exception is before the end of act 1, IIRC just before Non Stop, and is known as Laurens interlude. It's not in the album but you can find some videos online.

It's commonly called a sung through musical, which basically means that everything you hear is sung (or nearly everything) think Les miserables or any opera

‘Hamilton’ Would Last 4 To 6 Hours If It Were Sung At The Pace Of Other Broadway Shows | FiveThirtyEight
October 5, 2015 - I compared the quickest verses in two of its fastest songs (“Guns and Ships” and “Satisfied”) with two patter songs from other shows, and although the “Hamilton” songs beat the “Pirates of Penzance” song “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General,” the nervous breakdown in “Not Getting Married Today” from “Company” kept pace.

The release of an archival live stage film of Hamilton (starring Miranda) over the Fourth of July holiday weekend in 2020 resulted in the cast album surging to an all-time-high number two on the Billboard 200. A film adaptation of In the Heights starring Anthony Ramos hit theaters the following June. It was accompanied by an original soundtrack recording on Atlantic/WaterTower that topped Billboard's Soundtracks chart.
