July 10, 2010Manual Grain Mill/Grinder Recommendations?
The Country Living mills are super pricy but nice. The difference between these and lower end mills is obvious when you use them. They’re easier to turn and they can range from cracked grain to cake flour fine. I’ve heard good things about the Wondermill Jr, and they can be easily rigged to a bicycle. I haven’t used one, but they’re about half way between the lower end mills and the Country Living mills on the price scale and widely liked. I’ve got a Roots and Branches deluxe mill and the optional motor. I’m happy with it for what I paid. The motor is definitely a nice add on for regular use. If necessary I’m pretty confident I could rig it to a bicycle. It will grind flour fine enough for bread but I wouldn’t want to bake a fine cake with it. Eventually I’ll probably invest in a Country Living mill, but this one has served me well for my use and it’ll be a fine backup. More on reddit.com

Depends on where you are located. Would you want a more economical mill or one that has all the bells and whistles? I got a second-hand wooden electric mill, that is capable of milling oily seeds as well. Stones last about 30 years and cost about 20 bucks to replace. It has the option to switch to hand crank and also chain driven (think bicycles and external motors. Downside: the mill has a drawer where the flour falls into. In hindsight I would have prefered one of those tube-shaped outlets you place a bowl under. Still would buy again here in central europe
