How Much Does Siding Cost For Your Home In Calgary? [2023 Update]
March 1, 2024 - There are even homeowners who get by with stucco, brick, or metal siding (despite the challenges of using these materials in Calgary). Just remember: spending less upfront isn’t necessarily an advantage if it costs you more time and money down the road. While the potential costs associated with Hardie board siding may seem like an obstacle, you shouldn’t assume it’s outside your budget.

Weather Resistant Material Costs
So here is the thing - people cheap out on their envelope it's not something they value for whatever reason. Ask a builder that offers options during construction and see how often people select basic (like $500 basic) upgrades for their envelope. The answer is never, but several times that for interior upgrades? People go to town! When you bought your home did you care more about the stove or the siding on the house? Did you think about how long the siding was going to last or was it about what colour paint would look best in the living room? If you built your house did you think about the countertops for longer than your siding? What did you personally think about when buying a home in terms of value in the home? It's so easy to do an interior renovation, but so much harder to do an exterior one. Stucco isn't good for our climate. Ask anyone that works as a consultant in the field of envelope (and has nothing to sell you as a result). You will likely have envelope damage within a few years if you use stucco and it's not properly done (and it rarely is) and by that I mean rotten studs/mould/the whole gambit. Use Hardie and you won't have to worry about your siding for the next 50 years. Average 2 storey home - around the range of 20-25k all in for Hardie. Get battens around your windows (they'll add like $500 total, but it will save you when you need to redo your windows, many more times over). Get creative on the colour! They have like 700 colours now all factory painted. More on reddit.com

Question About Siding
I’m leaning towards vinyl siding, purely for cost savings. I beg you please, don't. Good ain't cheap and cheap ain't good. And do I need to say it looks dumpy? You don't specify the size of your home. Are you willing to haul the old stuff to the dump yourself? Nothing wrong with that since you are budget conscious. More on reddit.com

Hail vs Hardie Board
The townhouse complex I live in uses Hardie board. We were hit hard by the hailstorm. 100+ cars written off. The roofs needed to be replaced completely. Soft metals too (flashings and gutters). A few windows were broken too but no damage at all to the siding. I’d never own a house with vinyl siding. More on reddit.com

So I've seen lots on the news after the latest hail storm about moving away from vinyl siding, asphalt shingles etc. But what is the actual cost difference. Lets try to use an example. A 2000 sqft 2 story. Whats a vinyl siding job cost vs hardy board. Or asphalt singles vs rubber shingle cost? What other options are out there? Would love to hear from those in the business!

It's a good question. I'm interested in the answer. But this is like when I watch Holmes on Homes... Everytime that guy speaks it's... Well it should have been done this way over and above code, this should have been doubled up, better materials, blah blah... By the time Holmes built me a house I wouldn't be able to afford the damn thing. There is a balance between affordability, practicality, and robustness. I think the average decent house in Calgary is probably the proper balance.

r/Calgary on Reddit: Question About Siding
May 6, 2020 -

Hi all,

I apologize if this post doesn’t belong here, but I do have a question specific to Calgary and area.

I’m hoping to get my house re-sided this summer and was wondering what the potential cost might be (ballpark of course).

My house is a fairly standard, bi-level built in the early 70s. It also has a small detached garage.

I’m leaning towards vinyl siding, purely for cost savings.

So, my questions are, what kind of money am I looking at to replace the siding - including taking down the old stuff? How much of a price difference would Hardie Board siding be? Have any of you had great experiences with a local company that you would recommend?

Many thanks in advance!
