Cele|bitchy | Harriet Walter ‘never had children’: ‘The fact is I never felt cut out for it’
As for Walter’s talk of not feeling cut out to be a mother… I love that, and I love that she didn’t feel societal pressure to get married and have a kid just because every woman of her generation was doing the same. Some women aren’t cut out to be mothers! And some women who are mothers aren’t cut out for it. Photos courtesy of Avalon Red. r/SuccessionTV on Reddit: Harriet Walter is criminally underrated as Caroline.
May 25, 2023 -

In the discussion about this show's abundance of excellent performances, I don't see Harriet Walter's name come up enough, which is a shame because she elevates the material in every single scene she's in. Not a single false note in her performance, she just completely owns the Caroline character and makes her every bit as memorable as Logan despite having just a fraction of the screentime. Every single one of her scenes are like getting tickled by a snake: by turns hilarious and fanged.

She also feels like a signifier of this show's peaks in quality: with the exception of season 2, she has only ever appeared in the final two episodes of every season, with Armstrong himself penning the script. Her British aristocrat background also feels symbolic given that this is a show about Americans written by Brits: Caroline (and Walter's performance) seems to represent the lifeblood of this show's comic voice, which makes it ever more perfectly fitting that she's playing the kids' mother. Just a terrific character and performance, by far one of the best in the show.

In times past, young women from an upper-class background would be presented as "debutantes" on the London social scene; it was, in effect, an anachronistic way for privileged young people to find a husband or wife. "It's funny, because I just look back on that as a year lost. It was just incredibly boring," Walter told The Sunday Times, adding: "Quite a lot of my past I think of as being as distant and as weird as a Jane Austen novel."

April 9, 2024 - I kind of love that she admits to not feeling this extreme maternal feeling. That and it seems like she did not let herself get forced into being a mother because of expectations, and was able to find love and fulfillment along the way, good for Harriet!

October 21, 2023 - Or perhaps you’ve seen her double Emmy-nominated turn as the emotionally distant Deborah in Ted Lasso. Neither, though, are a match for Lady Caroline Collingwood, a mother so aloof she’s practically floating, who helped raise (or not, as the case may be) three of the most dysfunctional children in recent TV history: Succession’s Roy siblings.
