r/SuccessionTV on Reddit: Harriet Walter is criminally underrated as Caroline.
May 25, 2023 -

In the discussion about this show's abundance of excellent performances, I don't see Harriet Walter's name come up enough, which is a shame because she elevates the material in every single scene she's in. Not a single false note in her performance, she just completely owns the Caroline character and makes her every bit as memorable as Logan despite having just a fraction of the screentime. Every single one of her scenes are like getting tickled by a snake: by turns hilarious and fanged.

She also feels like a signifier of this show's peaks in quality: with the exception of season 2, she has only ever appeared in the final two episodes of every season, with Armstrong himself penning the script. Her British aristocrat background also feels symbolic given that this is a show about Americans written by Brits: Caroline (and Walter's performance) seems to represent the lifeblood of this show's comic voice, which makes it ever more perfectly fitting that she's playing the kids' mother. Just a terrific character and performance, by far one of the best in the show.

Succession’s Matriarch Dame Harriet Walter On Motherhood, Mistresses And The Best Man For The Job
May 23, 2023 - But Dame Harriet Walter’s portrayal of the acerbic wealthy aristocrat certainly deserves a standing ovation. Viewers of the HBO hit show - which comes to its conclusion after four critically-acclaimed and widely-memed seasons next week - first welcomed Caroline into the fold in season one, ahead of her daughter Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook) and Tom Wambsgans' (Matthew Macfadyen) wedding.

How Harriet Walter Found Her Niche Playing Truly Abominable Mothers | Vogue
October 21, 2023 - Set in the stifling Spanish heat, the all-women play opens on the funeral of Alba’s husband and the new widow’s decision to enforce a period of mourning on her daughters so strict they’re forbidden to leave their claustrophobic casa for eight years. And so they sit inside and sew and stew, growing increasingly frustrated by the promise of men, sex, and life that sits just beyond their front door. “The patriarchy is, occasionally, very well run by matriarchs,” says Walter of the play, which, written just before the start of the Spanish Civil War and Lorca’s own violent death at the hands of Nationalists, is often read as a critique of the country’s then fascist forces.
