June 3, 2019 - We turned our condo into a mix of Hogwarts and Diagon Alley for the party. Emma welcomed her friends with letters welcoming them to Hogwarts, including materials lists. The kids loved this light box, which I was lucky enough to win at last year’s SNAP! conference. Emma is still sad that we can’t make that conference this year (I took her last year). Maybe next year? This was our second round throwing Harry Potter birthday party – the first round was Emma’s seventh birthday.

July 20, 2023 - One thing I heard in my close family on specifically a Harry Potter themed birthday party was a game where the kids had to give their socks (or some particularly dirty/old pair of socks) to someone dressed as dobby, I think it was under a specific time and with teams themed around the 4 houses but can't remember the specifics ... March 31, 2022 - Instead of a birthday cake, I served Harry Potter Cupcakes. These were sorting hat cupcakes, each cupcake was filled with buttercream coloured in one of the four Hogwarts house colours.

Our home is over 100 years old, so we started out with a decent Hogwarts vibe, thanks to that. I then hung battery-operated faux candles from the ceiling with fishing wire so they appeared to float. I also went nuts with printables from Etsy. I printed out large pieces of Harry Potter quotes and Hermione girl-power art (best part: It can be repurposed as art for her room later), a funny sign for the powder room door, a personalized happy birthday banner, and the piece de resistance: Diagon Alley signs that we hung down our main hallway, to suggest an alley.)

January 18, 2020 - two of the highlights were the sorting ceremony and potions class. we took an old hat and sat each kid on a stool and called out their house. and then for potions, we gave each kid a large cup(very wide on the bottom so as not to spill or tip over. and made various flavors of koolaid. blended up some fresh fruits. some sweet spices(brown sugar, powdered sugar). etc. and whatever else you can think of...including ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise...and let them make their own potions. some of them were actually pretty good and the kids got a kick out of tasting eachothers....and saying things like, this tastes like polyjuice potion. and you can go on any potter site to come up with cool names of various ingredients.

January 21, 2024 - In the lounge we hung up some bunting (fabric bunting hand made by my mum years ago) and added a few touches such as eyeballs in an old glass jar, rat skeleton, etc. We collected bird feathers on a walk and spray painted them gold. I then cut the tips to insert a pen nib and put them in an inkwell on the mantle. I also hung an envelope addressed to Harry Potter in the fire place, as a nod to the scene where lots of Hogwarts letters come flying down the chimney into the Dursley’s lounge.
