Got myself the 2023 Collectors Wand and my son Harry’s interactive wand and I have to say I’m pretty disappointed with this aspect of the park (my only complaint about the park). We tried almost all the points in Hogsmeade yesterday and we only had success at one. We had a lady show us what the sensors looked like and helped us get the one, but even then we still struggled to make the cake move one time. I feel like they shouldn’t feel this hard to do, my son was pretty upset he couldn’t get them to work. He has been looking forward to this part of our trip the most.

Hi everyone. I actually worked with the interactive elements in Hogsmeade and while we all like to say they are magic I will pull back the curtain to help you out in 3 2 1 As most people have already pointed out the cameras are old and finicky, not to mention sometimes are aimed at not the best location. And I truly do mean finicky. Even at night I sometimes struggle to get them to recognize. In the daytime the lights and crowds moving past confuse the cameras really badly and don’t work anywhere as good as they should. Not to mention, the slightest scratch on the tip of the wand can result in the cams not reading them correctly. Thankfully if yours does have a obvious problem you can ask at a wand shop if they can repair it, and most (key word most) times they will oblige assuming they aren’t super crowded. The good news is that the cam system does have a built in system to account for its finickiness. Every time it recognizes you trying to do the spell but it doesn’t read it as the correct spell it will “loosen up” it’s restriction, meaning that if your the smallest bit off it will gradually get more and more accepting of it. After the third attempt it will generally recognize the spell. Once the system runs the animation it will tighten up its restrictions to baseline. If there is ever any concern on if you did the spell correctly and the animation doesn’t run, watch the camera. The lights will go out if it recognizes the spell, regardless of if the animation doesn’t run correctly. If this happens, please let one of the area team members know so tech services knows to investigate. Sorry for the wall of text, but hopefully this helps

An employee told us that the movement of the spell should only be about the size of the palm of your hand. Much smaller than I see anyone doing most of the time. We have the most success if we point directly at the object, pause for a moment, then quickly and smoothly do the correct motion. Agree with other poster that Diagon Alley spells tend to work much better than Hogsmead. It almost seems like the sunlight blocks the camera sensors!
