Hi guys I'm trying to get into programming but I accidentally bought the wrong Head First book. I was wondering if I can still use it as a starting point? I got the older 2005 version with XHTML which isn't relevant anymore as far as I know. Is there much of a difference between this version and the newer one without XHTML? Thanks!

I don't know about that book specifically, but I can tell you that any book about front-end web development written in 2005 is going to be quite out of date. In 2005, Internet Explorer 6 was the most common browser; MS didn't even release IE7 until 2006. Not that it has any bearing on the HTML and CSS standards, but people who did web development back then (i.e. me) will tell you just how poorly standards were implemented. Most resources at that time would teach you how to look at what browser you were in and do different code for them. While it will teach you the basics of how HTML and CSS work, it won't cover any of the more modern semantic tags, any of the newer CSS features like Grid or Flex, and XHTML is far more strict than HTML5 is. HTML5 has long since superseded HTML 4 and XHTML. You should find a resource that teaches that. It doesn't have to be a book; there are plenty of web-based resources like FreeCodeCamp that will get you moving in the right direction without having to spend more money.

Yeah get the newer version from around 2014, it's available for free online if you search around. The pdf and the practice files are lying somewhere on GitHub. That one was good though IMO, even though the CSS section was a little outdated/lacking (it doesn't really teach flexbox or grid systems), but it will get you started and I like that it's very practical, hands on and humorous which makes it a breeze to learn. It will teach you the basics which is enough because no matter what I feel like you won't learn properly until you start doing small project and googling stuff. But I'm also a complete rookie
