I agree with pretty much everything u/--Ty-- said. Even 1/8" is probably overkill. 14 gauge would probably be sufficient. The one addition that I would add is that you should consider using Cor-ten steel instead of Stainless.

I'm having a fire pit made and the dimensions are 28x22x14.5 tall. He uses 1/8 a36 normally. I'm having it built to 36x28x14.5 tall. I asked about changing it to 3/16 partially due to the increased size but also so it last longer. The goal is for it to pretty much last forever down at the lake house. Is there any real practical difference between them? Will 1/8 sag under the weight of a campfire? Will it likely rust all the way through much faster than 3/16? Just wanna make one purchase if possible. Thanks!

The fire won't hurt it, they usually fail from poor design. Thicker is better but if you keep it clean, not full of wet ashes and not in contact with the ground either a will last a long time
