So I just picked up two Hemnes Shoe Storage cabinets yesterday and was surprised when I opened them up to see particle board rather then solid wood, which I thought was the case for the entire Hemnes line. I have a Hemnes dresser in white stain and I love the solid feel and the look of it, so I am slightly disappointed by the construction of the shoe cabinets since the white is the same price as the solid pine versions in grey and black. Does anyone know why this would be the case?

Some Hemnes articles are available in White, which is the particle board, and others are available in White Stain, which is the solid pine. Items like the dressers are available in both White and White Stain . I can't say the rhyme or reason behind which are available in which, though. It's not a 'cost saving measure', just different styles. The 'Flat' White comes off as a little bit more modern (ie, less traditional), so that may factor into it.

It is possible that they changed the material of a product as a cost saving measure. Their Ribba frames used to have glass front few years ago before they changed to plastic.

I know I can buy a white one and DIY it but I suck at DIY.

Black brown ranges across Europe have been discontinued. No real reason why that I know of, just bringing in alternative colours. Did it with PAX too, as I wanted BB wardrobes but luckily the new grey matched as well for me. Might be a DIY job or eBay.

I don’t know if you can strip the white paint off and then stain it. While the HEMNES series pieces are mostly 100% wood; that’s not true of the shoe cabinet (at least in the US). It’s made primarily from particleboard and fiberboard. So check the materials list for the HEMNES you’re considering. If you can’t stain it; there are a lot of tutorials out there showing how to use paint to mimic a wood finish. Of course, you would have to lightly sand and use a shellac primer first before you start painting.
