I know this is an old post, so I’m posting for others searching this subject. In this example, 12x24 tile is trendy. Look back in historical photos - do you ever see such a large tile in a home? Very likely not. Hexagon tile is more classic, depending on the color and material. As someone pointed out, Saltillo is timeless. But, it’s really only timeless in a home whose architecture style has historically used it. You can make any shape trendy, depending on size, material, and color. If you have a Spanish or Mediterranean home style, Saltillo hexagon is a perfect choice, no matter the year. Saltillo in 12x24 would look out of place in everything except perhaps a modern Spanish home(?). Make your tile choices simple. Use neutrals that work with your other hard finishes. Don’t opt for an extravagant or busy pattern. Add color and interest in your less permanent choices, like rugs, art, and soft furnishings. If you do those things, you can redecorate without the urge to rip out old tile. Answer from Frequent-Advisor6986 on reddit.com

Full width view of the wood floor to hexagonal tile transition. Kitchen to family room.
It is a very specific taste and bothers my personal preference for symmetry, but that looks really cool. Nice work...and I appreciate just how much work that was. More on reddit.com

First tile project, large hexagon floor tile. Tips for improvement?
From the photo it looks great! Grout lines look consistent. Tile looks to be a little too tight to the wall, which may have caused the lippage, can’t say for sure. Usually you can rely on trim/baseboard to cover your expansion joints. But nothing really stands out from from what is pictured here. Would have attempted to shim the subfloor to level and used 1/4” cement board over subfloor to avoid the weird swelling/uneven surface with Ditra membrane. Overall prettay nice floor job for a first go! More on reddit.com

The look you desire decides the hex tile size for bathroom floors. Larger tiles offer minimal grout lines, making a space feel larger, while smaller mosaic tiles offer greater slip resistance, and mid-sized tiles offer both details in balance.

November 1, 2023 -

I'm stuck between choosing an 8" hexagonal concrete-look tile and a 12 x 24 concrete look tile. I'm certain of the concrete look - have other similar floors for several years and not the least bit unhappy with them. But not sure about the hexagon. Very worried I won't like it in 5 years. It's a smallish kitchen with wood cabinets and an island that takes up almost all the space it possibly can, so there is not a large open space with the tile - just the 42" around the island on 3 sides and a bit more on the fourth side. Please don't tell me to do what I love, because I've "loved" a lot of trends in the past that I now hate. I can't trust myself.

Do most designers dislike hex floor tile?
August 17, 2024 - The two bathrooms and laundry room were the original sheet vinyl from the 90s and all that nasty vinyl has been removed as we prep the floors for tile. I found a cement-look 12" x 24" porcelain tile that's the color of sandstone and it flows well with the hardwood. To add some interest, for the small bathroom, I found a 10" x 11" hexagon tile in a similar creamy color.
