r/headphones on Reddit: Comparison of the iBasso DX160 & Hiby R5 Music Players
June 3, 2019 - I have both still – I prefer the iBasso DX160 with some modifications to the system to get it running how I want from a performance standpoint. The battery life is still not great but I can live with that since I am usually near a way to charge it or play it while connected. The bigger screen is also a big plus for me besides the great sound quality, especially at this price. That said, I still have fondness of the Hiby R5.

Mid-Fi Segment DAP Buying Guide 2022: FiiO M11S vs iBasso DX170 vs HiBy R5 Gen 2 vs HiBy RS2
September 15, 2022 - When it comes to DAPs available under 500$, FiiO M11S has the most powerful output with 670mW of rated output power. It’s more than enough to drive any given IEM on the go. HiBy R5 Gen 2 can provide up to 475mW of power and the iBasso’s latest DX170 delivers 6.4Vrms of output.

r/DigitalAudioPlayer on Reddit: Hiby R4 vs iBasso DX180
October 27, 2024 -

I’m looking for my first DAP. I know that iBasso is for more powerful headphones, and possibly not needed for someone like me… yet. I’ve always been interested in the audiophile world and have tested quite a few headphones. I have used HD 6XX’s, MoonDrop Blessing’s before returning.

But between these two, how is the software on both? Is there a noticeable difference in audio tonality/soundstage between the two? I would be using this for services like Tidal, Apple Music, and offline Flac files.

I generally like warm sounding audio, with deep and thumping bass. I do INTEND to utilize Bluetooth and the 3.5mm jack as well. I listen to a lot of rock, EDM and hip-hop. I want something with a wide soundstage and “fun” sound. And want to be able to hear more detail than an iPhone. I know the Hiby r4 has plugins, which entice me but hearing about the crashes in the UI is a bit of a turn off.

I am a newb in the audiophile world but plan to be using balanced headphones on these when I can get them a little after new years. Just looking at my options right now before making any major decisions: and these two appeal to me most - and know the price different is hard to compare. But curious about those who may own both who can offer some insight. I don’t really like the design of the Eva at all - otherwise it would be a consideration despite the higher specs.

If anyone has used both or owns both - are the differences just on the software/RAM side and being able to drive more power hungry headphones? And is the sound/software 250$ dollars different given they’re close in CPU specs ?

TLDR: is the software/dac inside and build quality a 250$ difference from the R4 for a first dac? And do both work well with Bluetooth if I don’t have any of my headphones nearby on both? Also is the regular r4 that laggy compared to something like the DX180? If anyone has both, can they chime in on the differences to price ratio? Thanks!

iBasso DX320 vs. HiBy R6 Pro II (Gen 2) | Headphone Reviews and Discussion - Head-Fi.org
September 13, 2023 - If I had to choose between the two with money not being a factor I would choose the DX320x for two reasons: 1. a wheel to control loudness is much better in my book 2. the DX320x is Roon ready and allowed bit perfect or even upsampled playback via Roon & ARC, the Hiby is still limited to 24-48. I have always had very good experiences with iBasso and only sold my DX320x because I had the chance to get an equally good sounding device and spare quite some cash selling the iBasso.

r/DigitalAudioPlayer on Reddit: Ibasso DX180 vs Hiby R6 Pro II
April 10, 2025 -

I'm able to get both for the same price. I listen to mostly electronic music (ambient/trance/house) and plan to pair it with the Hifiman Edition XS, and sometimes I would be using my Bluetooth earbuds. I also use streaming apps like Apple Music so OS stability is important. On the other hand, lack of battery life and portability are not dealbreakers for me. As a bonus, it would be great if the screen has little glare and is optimized for watching movies.

Other DAPs I'm considering are Shanling M3 Ultra and Fiio M21, but their screen sizes make them less attractive. Also Shanling is using Android 10.

Personally, which would you choose and why?

June 17, 2019 - I have the Fiio M11. And the ibasso DX 220. I auditioned the Hiby, fantastic UI,wasn’t so so keen on the sound. The Fiio and ibasso are both excellent. Neither will disappoint. The Fiio is slightly more flexible, has Fiio link which is a nice feature, lovely large screen.

r/DigitalAudioPlayer on Reddit: Entry or mid range, worth the extra?
October 10, 2023 -

Hi all,

I’m looking to go from an iPhone with Hiby FC4 and S12’s to a DAP, my question is what are the main differences between something like a Hiby R4, Sony A306, iBasso DX170 (yeah 180 is coming) and something midrange like an A&K SR25.

I will mainly be streaming Apple Music (with SD of about 80gb), but I don’t want anything sluggish like the things I’ve seen about the Sony A306, I don’t want to get frustrated and disappointed by an entry level and wish I’d just spent an extra £200 on something mid.

I have a budget of £300 so I don’t know if I should get a used midrange, or new entry level 🤔

Thanks in advance.

Hiby R4 is best value/most customisable sound and would sound more engaging than the Sony which is low on power. But the caveat is that the Sony will likely outlast the Hiby and you’d have a lot less issues. Hiby seems to have terrible QC and reliability issues from what I’ve seen other mid-low end daps. These class A amps in the Hiby are really power hungry and get hot so your battery will suffer in play time and the device’s lifetime. Ibasso would sound on par with the Hiby but I believe their players lean to the more analytical side and unfortunately don’t have anything like the MSEB feature in the R4 to tweak the sound. I’d suggest looking at some reviews for what it sounds like and if that’s what u want. I’m thinking about getting the DX180 myself after a terrible Hiby experience (R6III). Also the ibasso has a replaceable battery which is a plus assuming it’s easy enough to source one. So yeah the Hiby is a gamble, you might be buying another dap in a couple of years, or do you want something that doesn’t sound as great but lasts you longer and doesn’t have as many issues. But if you’re just using IEM’s, not headphones, then you’re not really missing out on that much if you went the Sony. The difference in power/sound quality you’re not going to notice as much with lower end gear.

Hi, I went through something similar in a past month. I wanted to move from iPhone and iFi HipDac 1 to a dedicated DAP, mainly for home use. My requirements were Android OS (for streaming apps), somewhat fast UI, decent battery life (meaning at least 6 hours) and being able to use it for at least few years. I also wanted to be able to use system wide (non app dependent) PEQ for my headphones (Sundara, HD660S and 99 Noir) and IEM (Aria 2). The DAP should also be able to drive all my gear, mainly Sundara. After a lot of reading and Youtube I'd ordered iBasso DX170. I knew it would be probably slow, but reality was way worse. I was not even able to login with Tidal or Spotify and had to sideload apk, since I was not able to even start any app store. Unfortunately in order to have system wide PEQ I had to use app called Wavelet which did not work on DX170 at all. Music sounded really nice though. It cost 450 EUR. After that I'd ordered FiiO M11S. Device was way faster, was able to use Tidal and Spotify and PEQ using Wavelet worked as well. Unfortunately it was heavy and uncomfortable to use. Music sounded kinda boring to me and I was not immersed at all. It cost 360 EUR. At last I'd ordered Hiby R6 III after reading about possible heat issue with R4. Device is fast, kinda same as M11S. It feels lighter and less like a brick. Native system wide PEQ is great, much better than using Wavelet. The most importantly I was really immersed while listening music with this DAP. It cost 485 EUR. The Hiby R6 III is the only device I've kept and I was really surprised how different all those DAPs sounded.
