High Blood pressure? How can I get more info on risks and options
A good place to start is the ACC/AHA ASCVD risk calculator - https://tools.acc.org/ascvd-risk-estimator-plus/#!/calculate/estimate/ It takes a few of the most important risk factors to estimate your baseline 10y risk of a cardiac event, and it will estimate the risk reduction after starting a BP (or statin) med from that. For diet - your baseline risk * 0.8 = risk w DASH is a reasonable estimate https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6413235/ More on reddit.com

ELI5: What is Diastolic blood pressure specifically, and can benign things like stress raise it?

Your diastolic pressure is the pressure in your arteries while your heart (specifically your ventricles) are at rest. This is the lower pressure that is present in your arteries at all times (It gets higher when your heart is contracting - Systolic) Having an abnormally high arterial pressure all the time will eventually cause damage to vital organs, specifically the Kidneys, Heart and Brain. Stress initiates the Sympathetic ( Fight or flight) nervous system, which increases heart rate, increases how hard the heart contracts, and causes vasoconstriction....All of which raise diastolic blood pressure.

Current approach to isolated diastolic hypertension
December 30, 2020 - Some authors did not recommend treatment in young people as IDHT at normal systolic blood pressure levels is not associated with adverse cardiovascular events. However, lowering DBP in elderly individuals with coronary artery disease leads to an increase in morbidity and mortality as it impairs coronary blood flow autoregulation. Myocardial perfusion is maintained especially during diastole and when DBP is 70 mmHg and above [19]. Based on our clinical experience, we recommend individualizing the treatment in IDHT so that the DBP target is between 70 and 80 mmHg.
