Curious if anyone has attempted a cheaper route for high gloss panel walls?

I normally see these in like office buildings. I’ve also looked at PVC boards but that isn’t a cheap route. Just curious if anyone has come up with any other solutions.

My fiancée and I are looking at redoing our bathroom as a wedding gift to ourselves. While my soon to be better half is set on a bath fitter, I think I've talked her off the proverbial ledge - she does have one point though: Acrylic Shower walls are much easier to deal with.
Has anyone installed these over a standard cast iron alcove? Are they worth it? Or do they feel cheap? If they're not worth it, what's a good alternative to tile and grout?

As a contractor I refuse to install these things. Because I don’t want anyone calling me when it fails. It’s like sheets of plastic you glue to the wall. I always go with the tub surround but if your not taking out the old tub then it’s hard to retrofit.
