November 27, 2022 - However, for a hobbyist a good vertical belt sander is probably more useful, used for everything from smoothing cut edges to sharpening of lathe bits, chisels etc. although they will require hand honing afterward. For most flat pieces a hobbyist can make due with a fly cut surface followed by lapping, starting with abrasive paper on a piece of float glass. ... With suitable set-up devices, surface grinders sure make nice threading tools.

Surface Grinder - YEAH or NAY
I have a surface grinder but I'm also mainly do machine work. A mill and a lathe are usually the first steps into machining and have a lot more applicability for day to day repair jobs. Once you start branching out into surface grinder territory you're pretty far into the machining hobby. More on garagejournal.com

Surface grinder from milling machine?
I'm a hobby machinist with 5/8 ths of a two car garage stuffed with machine stuff. I have all the parts of a IH milling machine, except the head. And I have ball screws and nuts for all the axis. For those not familiar, this is a heavy table-top machine, around 1000 lbs. Since I have a heavy floor model milling machine, I don't really need another so the thought crossed my ming to create a surface grinder ... More on cnczone.com

Alternatively, our Baileigh Combination Belt & Disk Grinder may not be as portable as the Suburban, but it certainly boasts a slim profile for such a robust machine. Better still, the standard vacuum port means this grinder even helps to keep its small space clean. Choose Penn Tool Co. for a great selection of high-quality surface grinders for sale.

Brown&Sharp No2 surface grinder any good? | Page 2 | Canadian Hobby Metal Workers & Machinists
May 31, 2023 - When I was looking for a surface grinder, I turned down several in the under 1000$ range, purely because of the voltage. I ended up paying over 3500$ for a 240V 3PH Brown and Sharpe. I suppose that I could have just purchased an earlier one and fixed the voltage problem... My point on the motor is that you certainly can replace the motor. A belt drive one is far easier than an inline one. You will see some surface degradation, but, heck, it is a hobby, right?

What's the best surface grinder and why? | The Hobby-Machinist
December 23, 2024 - If it's for occasional use, manual might be fine. Any of the 'real' brands are probably fine assuming reasonable condition. I've owned a ton of surface grinders - which is to say one, which is a bit more than a ton - and the Brown & Sharpe Micromaster checks the boxes for me.

April 29, 2024 - The down feed needs to be in small increments, but a screw and wheel is fine, provided the mechanism is loaded in one direction. On a surface grinder the weight of the head and spindle will be sufficient. On my cylindrical grinder the infeed fine pitch screw has large weight on the end to ensure the mechanism is loaded in one direction.

Surface Grinder - YEAH or NAY | The Garage Journal
July 23, 2019 - I bought a 10 inch by fifteen inch Abrasive brand grinder thirty years ago for around twelve hundred dollars. A twelve inch wheel machine, totally manually driven with coolant. A machine BIG enough to really do something with. I've bought many more since then, but I use the original at least once a week. If you make things or need to SHARPEN things, a surface grinder is a LOT of bang for the buck.

Why Would I Want/Need a Surface Grinder? | Canadian Hobby Metal Workers & Machinists
September 6, 2025 - Magnetic parallels Magnetic vee blocks Angle diamond dresser Radius diamond dresser Flat dresser Spin fixtures are nice addition (harig punch grinder or anything really) You can pretty much make most of this stuff if you wanted. if you like to sharpen your own lathe cutters you can make jigs for touching them up. Wheels arnt too expensive and last good amount of time if your just flat grind if you start dressing them on angles and different shapes it can wear them out fast. Nice thing about surface grinders is you can make precision jigs for milling machine or just making nice surface finish on projects you can makes.

Surface grinder from milling machine?
An abrasive type machine requires fairly high surface speed and a lot of torque. This means a lot of HP. The workpiece acts like a brake on the periphery of a grinding wheel unless you are referring to a Blanchard type grinder. Those forces require a substantial machine structure. Unless you are proposing very limited metal removal, I doubt the IH is going to handle those forces. Just my opinion. Good luck, Dick Z ... Thanks Dick, When I look at pictures of machines which I guess are hobby grade; 18 X 6" with 6" wheels they look very much like my IH, in fact that's how I got the idea.

Cylindrical grinders usually have big wheels, this helps a lot with plunge grinding multiple parts. I remember from years ago that most common industrial surface grinder we used had a standard 250 mm wheel. My hobby/industrial 6 x 12 surface grinder has 7" (177 mm) wheel.
