Current KD here. Where to even start... this is going to be a loooong response. Hope you have some coffee ready. First and foremost, it's a sales position. You have revenue goals, service lead goals, measure goals and credit card signup goals. Expect to be nagged about these weekly, particularly service lead goals. You have to be a little aggressive about signing people up for services. There's a steep learning curve for the various pieces of software you'll need to learn just to sell and manage your orders. Software development is not Home Depot's strength, so the software is janky and buggy. Learning the proprietary ordering/sales systems has been THE hardest part for EVERY off-the-street KD in my district. The design software is 2020 Design. It is NOT as intuitive or user-friendly as Photoshop or Illustrator. The keyboard shortcuts are minimal, so it's a lot of mouse clicking. You'll adapt to the UI quickly with your software experience, but don't expect the functionality of Adobe software. You're expected to also create Powerpoint presentations for your customers and installers. Your knowledge about color theory, negative space and general graphic design concepts will translate very well to kitchen and space design. That's the fun part for me. It's great seeing a customer's eyes light up during design consultations. It's very gratifying. The training is not adequate. It's all video based, either on-demand video or video conference. There is no dedicated trainer for the sales aspect of the job. In theory, it should be your Supervisor, but they won't have the time. You have to go ask more experienced co-workers to sit down with you and teach you. Or you teach yourself through trial and error. Don't be afraid to aggressively ask for help from other sales departments. Speaking of which, learn how to sell flooring, window decor, appliances, and doors/windows. It'll be easy to meet your goals if you can float between departments. Expect to be interrupted frequently by customers looking for items or seeking assistance. Our desks are smack in the middle of the sales showroom, so we're visible to every customer walking by. You'll get pulled from the desk to cut blinds, cut turf/carpet, build orders in other departments, etc. The Flooring department is frequently understaffed and you'll spend a decent chunk of time over there. This is BY FAR the most frustrating part of the job. If a Flooring Specialist calls out sick, I know I won't get any time to work on designs that day. The good thing is you'll pick up measures and sales. All that said, I love my job. I'm realistic about what it is and I'm very good at time and project management. You must, must, must be very self managed. I also have really awesome co-workers and a chill manager, which really makes me want to be at work. It's a very goofy, fun group. As an hourly employee, their camaraderie is what makes the biggest difference. I hope that helps! I'm happy to answer any other questions you have.
