Well, you can invest in something extra fancy such as the ONA Puller, but if you're a homeowner doing it on your own, you'd have limited use for it. It would work. The other option is doing naughty things involving a drill, pliers, heat, and pain. Someone may chime in here with some ancient plumbing wisdom. For a last ditch effort, If your replacement cartridge came with the white tool, used to twist the old cartridge and break it free. You can put it on there and use pliers. You don’t need a special tool for this. Get a pair of pliers or an adjustable wrench and grab the metal ring on the outside of the cartridge and turn left. There are six “notches” on the ring that your pliers/wrench will grab onto. The white internal portion will most likely not rotate or move at all. Also make sure your water is shutoff before taking off this ring. More on reddit.com

I turned the water off (!), removed the handle, sheath, etc. I managed to get the cartridge clip (?) out from the top.
I’m now trying to pull the cartridge straight out, but I can’t get it to budge.
The whole system of pipes is moving, and I feel like I’m going to create a catastrophic problem if I keep pulling.
Am I missing something that needs to be done first? Am I just weak? 🥺

UPDATE 2 SUCCESS!!! Followed the directions on the cartridge puller, and it came out with just a little effort. What a relief! The new cartridge is now installed and everything is re-assembled. Water is turned back on and tested it out…no more leak! 🤯 Thank you all so much once again! Total cost was around $15 for the puller and $55 for the new 1222 cartridge.
