Hi everyone, new to the group and new to woodworking!

I’m wondering if anyone has experience getting lumber delivered from Home Depot. I don’t have a lumbar yard in my area, though there’s also a Menards.

I need to get several sheets of plywood and lots of 2x4s, and I know I can rent a small truck at HD for about $30. But I wouldn’t have any help loading and unloading all that lumber, and also thinking about the time it would take to get it all done.

Their delivery fee is about $80 for what I need. My guess is that it’ll be a crapshoot whether I get good lumber at all since they probably won’t be as careful selecting it as I would. Hence my conundrum.

Does anyone have any experience getting lumber delivered? Should I try to do it myself instead?

I’ve done it a few times. You’re going to get what they pick. It will be a crapshoot, but I can guarantee they’re not going to sort through the stack of 2x4s to pick out the straight and pretty ones.

Ive rented the truck and had it delivered, I’d rent the truck. You can ask an employee to help you load it in and there is a cool Kreg tool I use to unload large sheet goods by myself. There’s other versions of that tool that are cheaper, but I have had good experience with that one.

Why not just pick your boards and bring them home , you can rent their pickup for like 19.99, sure its cheaper than having them deliver

Lumber yard. They actually care about quality of the wood that they stock and will replace the boards that aren't up to quality standards.

Is it possible to have several sheets of plywood delivered? (I’m aware there’d be a delivery cost) I have a tiny car so I was going to drive there, rent a Home Depot truck, load my wood on to that drive home drop off, drive it back, then drive home, would be willing to pay for delivery if it’s reasonable for my budget

If it's just a few sheets, and you're not too far from your store, it'll be much more budget friendly to rent the truck. $19 for the first 75 minutes (iirc, I don't cover at the desk often), plus gas. It'll be $79 flat to deliver, to compare. Also worth considering that the delivery will not have a set time window of arrival (unless you want to drop an extra $20), so it could arrive any time between 6 am to 8 pm. The driver will call in advance, but still..
