Between the big boxes here, Lowes is better. More plants and better care. HD has a tiny selection. Walmart doesn't invest much effort into maintaining plants. The quality at Lowe's really does depend on the staff and management though. You can definitely tell when they're short on employees (stuff not watered, not cleaned, left outside in bad weather, etc.). I dislike some of the suppliers that big boxes contract with but that's out of the hands of the people who work there. The local nurseries have a wider selection and they can have larger specimens. They still buy some/most of their stock from growers instead of growing everything on their own but their staff is better at plant care. They can also pivot faster to match trends (depending on the owner) but they can still supply some less mainstream plants. They're also much better places to meet and geek out with other plant people. The big boxes are really convenient to get to. Pretty much en route to/from work/errands and they have late hours. The locals are much further away from anywhere I would normally drive to and their hours are so much more limited so visiting locals is more like a special treat. More on reddit.com
