r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: How is Home Depot/Lowes for kitchen remodeling?
December 16, 2015 -

Apologies if this has asked before but I couldnt find it. I am looking to get my kitchen remodeled (cabinets, appliances, counter tops etc etc) and change the floors in my condo. How is Home Depot/Lowes for such a project? I have spoken to a couple of contractors/specialists and compared to them, I really liked Home Depot because it feels like a one stop shop and I am in much more control of the whole process. Also the “ball-park” estimates that the contractors have given me are over my budget and Home Depot/Lowes seem like I would be able to do what I want in my budget.

This is the first time I am doing such a large project so I wanted to know if going to a big box store like Home Depot/Lowes is worth it

I did a design with home depot. Picked the 15 thomasville cabinets with a large pantry cabinet, all the features I wanted. They ended up costing $26,000 in total. Pretty ridiculous. But they had a 30% off special going that would knock the price down to $16k. Which I'm thinking isn't too bad. Only thing is the deal ends in 2 days and I have to make this decision before I was quite ready.

Is this 30% off deal truly a good value that might not come around again soon?

We want a new kitchen and thinking Ikea or Home Depot. We would try and do as much work as possible for ourselves. Any tips? Experiences you want to share?

I redid my kitchen with ikea and would go with them again. They have a design tool on their website where you can price everything out, add/subtract bells and whistles, and make sure everything fits. IKEA’s cabinets install on a rail system, so if you can hang that level, install should be easy. I paid for install because I didn’t have the time and the wife wanted it quicker. The delivery/pickup process and exchanges for ikea were simultaneously streamlined and annoying. For the same price point, Home Depot is also going to be in the mdf-range of cabinets. There is at least one company that makes ikea-fitting door and drawer fronts (Semi Handmade). They were too expensive for me on the initial kitchen buy, but may be a refresh upgrade for me. Drawers on the bottom (besides sink and corners), cabinets up top. Soft close is nice to have. Think about crown/bottom moulding for upper cabinets during the design phase; I didn’t and regret it.

IKEA by a very wide margin. Their stuff is sturdy and well designed. Hardware is good quality. But where they whip HD and others is in the vast array of storage choices. Assembling the first box takes 20 minutes, assembling the last one will take <5 minutes. Don’t buy their very cheapest doors and drawer fronts , buy mid range . All lower cabinets and tall cabinets ( like floor to ceiling pantries) should be drawers and pullouts. No shelves. IKEA has many options and choices for these, including drawer- in-drawer for small items.

r/HomeDepot on Reddit: Have you used Home Depot kitchen remodeling services?
December 23, 2022 -

Hi, I’d love to hear from anyone who has used the kitchen remodeling services from Home Depot. My husband and I had an appointment this morning with a member of their team and the process seemed super straight forward and easy. She brought samples of a ton of different tiles, cabinets, etc. and we selected everything that we liked. What we’re planning on having done is replacing our cabinet doors, getting a new backsplash, and new counter tops.

My dad has worked in construction for a very long time and is trying to convince me to look elsewhere. His reasoning is that Home Depot just finds contractors and charges more money since they work as the middle man. The woman who came to our house today though told us that all of their contractors work for Home Depot and are not outsourced from a different company. I’m torn because I like the simplicity of making all of my selections and having one team be able to do everything. We had a prior estimate from someone who can do our countertops, however he does not work on cabinets and we’d have to find someone else to do that as a separate project.

If you’ve used Home Depot’s home services, I’d love to hear about your experience. I’d like to get the ball rolling on my kitchen and get it done as soon as possible, however I don’t want to just jump into something that I may later regret. Thanks in advance!

Looking to do cabinets, countertops, and appliances in my kitchen (basically a remodel) and am being quoted $19-23k by Home Depot estimator. Never having gone through them, any idea how close these estimates usually are? Most stuff is low to mid end.

Thanks!

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Home Depot Kitchen Remodel, this line item is breaking my brain...
September 21, 2020 -

Wife and I are trying to remodel our kitchen and attached laundry room/pantry. Not changing any layout or walls, not moving any plumbing...minor electrical changes. Demoing to the studs, and replacing all cabinets (18 total) and countertops (80SF). Contacted a couple contractors, in our heads we we're hoping to spend around $20k (not including any appliances).

One contractor wouldn't even come to the house until we had double that budgeted, another (that was nice and who we liked) came out and said he'd work within our budget but he was giving a similar ballpark, albeit without actually working up an estimate. At which point we decided, oK....let's put some sweat equity in...we'll get an estimate from Home Depot thinking that meant essentially we'd buy the cabinets & countertops through them and would hire someone to install.

Just got our final estimate which ended up being nearly $36k. Basically $14000 for Kraftmaid (middle tier) cabinets, $8700 for installed Cambria quartz countertops (Fully realizing this is the highest cost tier and a place we will likely trim) and $13000 for the demo and installation ($5500/$7500 respectively). Not including any of the electrical or even the simple plumbing like connecting the sink.

So, that didn't work out like we planned, but what's REALLY BREAKING MY BRAIN is the line item for JUST the demo. $5500.00!!! which just seems incredibly, incredibly insane to me. Initially we thought we'd do the demo ourselves, but that line item is making me think that I can't possibly be qualified to do it if it costs that much.

At this point we're going to circle back to the first contractor and get an actual estimate from him to compare. Any feedback on any part of this scenario is welcome, because at this point I want to move back in with my parents and let them decide all the things again. But, I'm 47 with two kids so that wouldn't go over well (not to mention I live in SoCal and they're in TN).

TL;DR The demo cost estimate is so unexpectedly insanely high. I want to DIY the demo. I had thought I had enough skill to tear down cabinets and countertops, but am now second guessing. Can I conceivably do this part myself?

We are looking to get new cabinets, countertops, a kitchen sink, and maybe backsplash. I've heard conflicting things about using stores like Lowe's to do this work. Has anyone used them, or considered it and then changed their mind?

I've heard the skills of their employees can be questionable and that they charge quite a bit more than a general contractor would. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA.

I would take plans to a local cabinet maker, give them a chance to bid the job. You might be surprised. You will get a much better product. If not then wait till May/June when HD and Lowes put their cabinets on sale. IMO they have the same products. Good luck! 😊👍

Hi there. I wanted to offer a few personal experiences that I hope might be of use to you.

First of all, I'm just your average DIY'er - but I'm an old man at 57 with a lot of DIY scars to show.

While you surely can buy your cabinets at one of the big box stores as others have commented they will be a) lower quality and b) more expensive than some other options. So let's look at those options:

  • Keep your existing cabinets but upgrade the doors. My wife and I did this years ago and were very happy with the result. We had an old Sears Craftsman home on the national registry. The kitchen cabinets were solid but they had very plain doors. We removed the doors, painted the cabinet frames a blue color that my wife liked, and then bought just custom doors. We did buy them from THD and as I recall the doors alone cost about $1500 or so. In the end it looked really nice.

  • Use a local cabinet maker. Someone else commented this and I would highly recommend it. You would get better quality cabinets and most likely not pay much more.

  • Here's my favorite but maybe not your cup of tea. This approach is probably more for r/DIY crowd (but I'm permabanned from there so I couldn't post it if I wanted to LOL). Craigslist. That's right - craigslist. I have found that cabinets are a dime a dozen on there. If you live near a really nice area check for listings there consistently. You would be amazed what "rich" people will tear out and dump on there so they can remodel to their heart's content. I'm building cabins for our equestrian bed&breakfast all the time. For my current one here are a couple of pictures of the cabinets I bought for $250 in CL.

I'll go further to say that if you look at the second picture that entire kitchen has cost me $1100 to build, including all appliances (another item always easy to find on CL), and a corian top (I bought a plain sheet off of CL and had to cut, rout, and glue it but that was a lot easier than I thought it would be thanks to Youtube). I had friends pay anywhere from $10-40k to remodel their kitchens and I feel like they need to have their heads examined. But to each his own.

Best of luck to you OP whatever route you go.

February 11, 2025 -

I’ve never done a kitchen makeover before, but HD was quoting $137k for this job. I’m sure it’s correct, but it just felt like they railroaded the entire thing. And she only wanted to talk about replacing the cabinets (and I have 3 options for replacing the cabinets, which I don't really need), someone else would come out to talk about the countertops I guess. I am SURE this is a normal process but I’ve never done it before and I needed someone to help me begin this project. Anyway, that all being said.

The cabinets need to be sanded and painted. I can do that.

The tile is very old and the grout is difficult to clean/work with. We really were looking to replace that. The problem with the tile is that there is so much tile on the walls, so we’d need to get a drywall person to do that.

I can do the cabinets. I can’t work with HD again, they were exhausting and confusing. Are there any other big huge red flags I need to be worried about?

Thanks!!

The green tile is the biggest problem.

I'm looking to update a much older home that hasn't really changed since the 60s. I want to renovate the kitchen and the floors.

I'm seeing on Home Depot's website that they offer not just the materials but also installation services?

Has anyone used Home Depot before? What was your experience? Did you save money or did they screw up and you had to go find a local contractor?

We are planning a kitchen remodel and I’m wondering if anyone has recently worked with Home Depot for design, custom cabinets, also whether you used them for install and how that was. We did a kitchen in another house (different area) about 10 years ago and it was a good experience.

If you’ve done a kitchen another way that you were happy with, I’d also like to hear about it.

We think this is our forever home so we’re not looking to scrimp but also don’t need something crazy expensive.

I've never renovated a kitchen before and I need a relatively large renovation done. I have a contractor I may use vs using Lowes / Home Depot's subcontractors; however, how are the cabinets from them quality wise? When I Google for reviews for their brands I see a LOT of complaints but is that just bias bc those are the people who post? Which Lowes / HD brands are good? Is it worth going through them or should I do a local smaller store? I feel like those prices would be higher? I'm clearly new to this and could use some advice.

I am in the process of getting quotes for a home renovation I'm about to undertake and I was wondering what kind of Kitchen cabinets do people buy and from where?

I really like the peace of mind of buying from a big box retailer for peace of mind on the warranty aspect so I dont really mind paying a tad extra, but I definitely am trying to buy the best quality for the most reasonable price.

I would appreciate any feedback youd have on either of them or maybe another retailer that youve had a good experience with. Thanks!

Is it always busy with customers? Is there downtime to work on designs or is it mostly doing it off the clock? Does the designer go out to customer sites or is it in house with someone else measuring? MOST IMPORTANTLY Do KD’s still get an apron?

I’ve been in kitchen remodeling for 8 years, half as an installer half as a showroom manager. I enjoy the work, but there’s no more room to grow and the owners aren’t even trying to run it anymore. Looking for a way out but I want to know what I’m realistically getting in to

Yeah, I know most would stay away - but I had good experience with ordering cabinets and did my own installation in the past. This time, I'm just adding a few cabinets to an open wall: 2x 18x30, 1x 36x30 with glass door inserts, and 2x 18x12 and 1x 36x12 on top without glass inserts. Got a quote for under 3K for Kraftmaid but there was a sale going on, so want to see if these are ongoing or need to do this sooner than later. TIA.
