r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Leather sofa, how to restore color which is fading/changing over time
August 10, 2019 -

Is there any way to restore the color on our leather sofas? This is visibly due to head sweat, etc...but something spilled on the arm and we can’t seem to wipe off whatever was spilled on it. The reason we haven’t noticed it in a while is the sofa is positioned in the darker area of our rec room where the home theatre is at.

Tonight we moved the sofa over because our carpet is being steam cleaned and we noticed all of this.

The sofas are made by FlexSteel.

r/furniturerestoration on Reddit: Worn leather restoration and maintenance suggestions?
October 4, 2024 -

Bought this pre-owned Stressless Reno chair that's a bit faded and worn. Any suggestions on how to restore it? This is an option I came across but not sure if it's a good idea for this beautiful chair. Afraid I'd ruin it. STARTSO WORLD Leather Recoloring Balm, Dark Brown Leather Repair Kit for Furniture, Leather Dye, Leather Color Restorer for Couches, Leather Couch Paint | Repair, Restore Faded & Scratched Leather https://a.co/d/5VGCMD1 So far cleaned it with Lexol leather cleaner but haven't applied the conditioner yet.

This looks fine. Look closely at your leather. It's a two-tone leather finish. There's a base and a print coat of color on this leather. This is the "Chocolate Paloma" leather and it has a darker base layer of color/paint and a lighter print layer of color/paint applied to it, giving it a unique, non-uniform, mottled/antique looking finish. The excessively faded spots are the natural result of use and wear. So, the first problem with the balm is that you're going to end up re-painting your 2-tone brown chair into a boring and uniform looking 1-tone brown chair. No good. The second problem is that balms are not really for Stressless leather, which is mostly semi-aniline. This just means the leather is coated with a clear. The balm is not going to penetrate the clear and go into the leather. It's going to sit on top and it's going to be super apparent that you painted it. Balms are mainly intended for temporary restoration of uncoated leathers (aniline leathers) where the balm can actually have a chance of penetrating into the leather and staying there. I've seen the aftermath of balms on Stressless leather furniture and it's hideous. I'm talking brush strokes and the fact that the balm rubs off with water. I've never successfully recovered a Stressless chair that got painted with leather balm ... I couldn't even convince a leather restoration professional to remove the balm ... he just said it was too much work, not worth it, not even worth me paying him $300 to do it, if that gives you any idea of how much damage balms can do. On the flip side, the balm did rub off with water -- I found out when I had to carry the chair out his shop and into my car during a rainstorm. Imagine sitting in a chair where sweat causes the balm to rub off onto your clothes. Yeah. Do not do it. If you do want to restore some of the faded areas, your best bet will be taking it to a leather restoration professional (Google for local pros) and having them repaint the chair. A professional will be able to replicate the two-tone Chocolate Paloma color, I've personally had this done before. Cost about $250. Not hard at all for a professional. For a DIYer? I would not suggest it. Just make sure to chat with the leather restoration professional first to check if he's familiar with the base-and-print leather coloring strategy.

Something like this I would try leather honey, works great, restores the color a bit and protects it well afterwards, hard to tell from the picture if it does require a re dye... dying leather isn't easy and is time consuming as well depending on how dry the leather is. If it's really dried out it will just absorb and absorb the dye and then when it dries it will be a different color altogether. Try the honey stuff that's what I would do and I do this stuff for a living
