Price of quality mosaic tile higher than expected?
All depends on what your willing to spend. I've installed $6.00/ Sq ft mosaics and I've installed $200/ Sq ft mosaics. You might want to see if there's a price difference for labor too. Many installers charge more per Sq ft to install mosaics than large sizes. More on reddit.com

We are doing a big remodel, and the architect has suggested specific tiles. I've seen tiles that look fine at Home Depot for a fraction of the price. So I wonder if I am missing something? ... I don't want to be penny-wise and pound-foolish and end up saving on tiles to pay 4x more on installation or bad quality, but I also don't want to just pay extra if I don't know what I am paying for.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Cheap tile at Home Depot, Lowe’s or Floor and Decor is often (not always) much lower quality than the tile you find at a flooring store. Sometimes it’s actually a lower quality version of the same tile and other times it’s a cheaply made tile that simply looks like the original. What I mean by lower quality is that the tile may be significantly bowed, have massive discrepancies in size, have lots of chips, drips in the surface coat, irregularities in design, different shades between tiles, repeating patterns, etc. In the case of natural stones, you will often find cheap versions from China instead of quality products from Italy. Depending on the application, some of these issues may not be that big of a deal. A floor with an offset pattern using 12”x24” tiles, for example, is a good place to use a lower quality porcelain because you can more easily hide the flaws. Intricate mosaics or “artsy” tiles to be installed in a shower or backsplash, however, may have flaws that literally cannot be hidden, regardless of the skill level of your installer.

I am currently planning the remodel of 2 bathrooms and a garage access hallway/closet.

I went to pick out tile today and one bathroom the walls and floors are only $6/sq ft and it seems decent quality (only subway tile and a large slate type in black)

My other bathroom has a tiled floor shower planned and I was going to have the floor and shower all tiled in mosaic hexagons which turned out to be $42/sq ft. The total tile cost for that bathroom is $2600 after a 20% discount. ($1500 over my built in allowance.) This is still in my budget but being a newb this was a bit shocking to me.

I can't help but feel dumb paying that much more than the other tiles. We definitely want the mosaic look. Other tile sheets in the 20 dollar range look like not so great (at least at the place I am looking.)

Is the $40-$50 range per sq ft way more than I should be considering? Planning on living here forever.

All depends on what your willing to spend. I've installed $6.00/ Sq ft mosaics and I've installed $200/ Sq ft mosaics. You might want to see if there's a price difference for labor too. Many installers charge more per Sq ft to install mosaics than large sizes.

Depends on where/what you’re buying but yea 40-50 is a lot. Builder depot is selling mosaic marble for $10-20 sqft.
