For "functional": when I moved into my place there were a couple of old, cheap hollow-core doors in the basement with no knobs or hinges. I bought a couple sawhorses from a big box store and laid a door across them. It's been working for 10-15 years. Plenty of surface space. My "tower" style pc sits over one sawhorse and a printer sits over the other. My monitors are in the middle. If you have a "Re-Store" or other local shop that sells used doors, molding and other used hardware you could prolly do something similar for cheap, maybe even the sawhorses. More on reddit.com

In this order: GOOD chair, nice monitors + monitor arm, standing desk or at least a large enough desk, wireless mouse + mechanical keyboard + wristrest, lighting I bought a "gaming chair" from Secretlab ($400) 1.5 yrs ago, it was great and got rid of my back pain, but looking back I probably should have saved a bit more and gone for a used Herman Miller. For monitor I think getting a good monitor arm is more important than a better display (as long as they are decent). Dual monitor is a necessity for me. I use a standing desk (frame $250 and tabletop $80 + custom paint job & finishing)and adjust the height frequently. I don't really stand throught out the day because of it, mostly finer adjustments to change my posture. For Lighting, I got a BenQ Screenbar ($100) and love this thing. Doesn't take up any desk space and provides good lighting. If I'm choosing I would blow it on a nice chair honestly. It made the biggest difference for me. Also, most other items on this list are relatively affordable so you can get them later more easily (cannot comment on life-size model of coach Dave). More on reddit.com

Craigslist, under the for sale section, has a "Business" subsection that I occasionally see cubicles and other office furniture for sale. That is if you're looking for budget friendly furniture. There are also plenty of companies that specialize in reselling office furniture. They'll buy out a entire office that might have relocated or went out of business and sell to customers just like yourself. More on reddit.com
