How about a sideboard or cabinet in the middle flanked by two bookcases at either end? That would give the wall symmetry and you could hang a large, attractive piece of art over the sideboard to have a nice background for your video calls. I think a photo(s) of a place you love, on top of your bookcase would be nice. You could also put a couple of plants, and/or something ornamental that you may already possess. I'd look at hanging the prints somewhere you can see them while sitting at your desk. We all need a visual break from the computer screen. If they're scenic and/or personal, they'll help relax you when you need a mini break. If you could find or enlarge a couple of pics of family and friends, that might be nice to have on your wall as well. If you could find another bookcase, you could store your printing paper there, as well as other 'office' supplies. Having plants around - even if they're fake - seem to help people who are working on their own - to relax, even when work things aren't going well. This applies to office work in general, as well as working for an educational goal. Try to clear your desk of clutter at the end of every day. It can be frustrating (over the long term) to start your day with an untidy desk. Find a system that works with how you work, so you'll be ready for the next day. Having one. Moved to a bigger place, turned my living room office nook into a separate dedicated room. Much easier to focus on work while I'm working, and (more importantly) much easier to disconnect from work when I'm not. Aside from that: A big, stable sit/stand desk (nicer than the one I have at the office) A good monitor and a stand that allows me to adjust it to a reasonable height (avoiding RSI issues) Nice curtains, pictures, a rug, other decorations as appropriate. Makes it a nicer place to spend time. Lights, if it doesn't get much natural light. More on reddit.com
