How to Plan Your Home Theater Layout: Room Size and Seating Considerations | Calculating Home Theater Dimensions
December 6, 2008 - Standard layouts for this setup are two rows of four theater seats either in a straight or curved configuration. This is an excellent choice if you plan to entertain your friends and family in your home theater.

How do you optimize seating in your home theatre?
I doubt there is a “right” answer There is no singular right answer, but here are my opinions on each of these: Should I optimize for the front row or back row? Optimize for the front row to have the ideal video and audio experience. Shoot for a 40-45 degree field of view in the front. The back will be whatever it is. When you try to optimize for everything, you're optimizing for nothing. The people in the back do not care. They might even prefer to have a smaller image. Having a great front row and decent back row is better than having great back row and unusable front row. Should the front row be used for primary seating instead of the back row? Yes, see above Should I switch to a 2.4 ratio screen for movies, but get masking for sports and video gaming? IMO, 90% of home setups have no business doing anything other than a 16:9 screen. I will paste my manifesto on this topic below this comment. But the short version of this is that unless you actually have room shaped to optimize for 2.4:1 and are willing to put in the work (and money) to set it up properly, you will probably just end up with a mediocre setup that is worse than the 16:9 equivalent in any way. What viewing angles are recommended for the middle of each row in a two row home theatre? My personal preference is target 45 degrees in the front center seat. Everything else falls where it may. You will probably end up with a smaller screen than 140 inches. That is fine. Most projectors under $10K can create a far higher quality 130" HDR image than 140". More on reddit.com

I could use advice on how to arrange the seating in a rectangular media room
Is there an argument for setting this up with the screen on the "long" 15.5 foot wall wall so the seating area could then be wider and fit more seats but would have to be closer to the screen? 77" OLED having the seating at 9 to 9.5 feet, this would then allow you to even do a proper 7.x.4 setup with walk ways around the sides and rear of the seating. To me this would feel bigger than trying to cram in smaller seating the shorter width. More on reddit.com

Home Theatre Layout. Any advice would help. Room is 20ft x 12ft. All couches recline but don't have to. Layout 3 and 4 the 65" tv is fairly far away from the furthest couch so that could be a problem. Layout 3 and 4 I would build a platform to raise the couches.
Layout 1 is more social, if you’re having friends or family join you. More on reddit.com

r/hometheater on Reddit: I could use advice on how to arrange the seating in a rectangular media room
February 18, 2023 -

I'm buying a house under construction in Texas and it includes a dedicated windowless "media room" upstairs. I'm not a huge movie buff and plan to use the room to watch sports more than anything else.

The room is 15.5 x 11 feet. There are double doors in the middle of one "long" side to enter the room from the game room/loft landing on the second floor. Diagram here: https://imgur.com/BQCdLgq

My initial thought was to put a put a 77 - 85 inch TV on the wall on the "short" (11 foot side). Then I'd put a sofa or a row of 2-3 of those 'theater seats' about 9-10 feet back facing the screen.

The problem I'm running into is that this configuration leaves very limited width for the seating area. 11 feet = 132 inches and if I want to leave a couple of feet for clearance on either side of the sofa/ seating then I'm sort of limited to a small sofa or only two of the big reclining seats with cupholders. Unless I went with risers for tiered seating, the seating might have to be limited.

Is there an argument for setting this up with the screen on the "long" 15.5 foot wall wall so the seating area could then be wider and fit more seats but would have to be closer to the screen? This would put the back of the sofa just inside the double door entry, but then I'd have room for a larger sofa or bank of 3 big theater seats, with swivel chair on one or both sides.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Home Theater Design and Layout Best Practices and Tips – Audio Advice
September 30, 2024 - While this is a matter of some small debate, if you get somewhere between a ratio of 1 to 1.6 or 1.7 and 2.3 to 2.4, you will be well on your way to an ideal home theater layout. As an example, if you went 1 to 1.6 to 2.4, a room with a 10’ high ceiling would be 16’ wide and 24’ long. Staying within this ratio will ensure your room has fairly consistent bass in the main seating area of the room.

October 9, 2013 - For rooms where there is flexibility in dimensions, such as a new home or addition, then the approach to use is “inside out”. Choose the number of seats you want and their type, arrange them into rows, and from there specify the room dimensions. When determining how many seats are required in your theater it is good to think about the “normal” way the theater will be used.
