I have seen a guy making his grinder out of plywood - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2mnRY4Xll0 just regular wood is not good in my opinion especially for wheels. They are very week when it comes to splitting along the grain. I used pallet jack rollers for therollers on my first grinder. They needed some minimal lathe work (crowning one and making the other 2 flat) and they also needed axles to be machined, but it was not too expensive to find a machine shop to do it for me. You can also order full set of rollers and drive wheel for about 120 usd. Answer from Deleted User on reddit.com

r/knifemaking on Reddit: Wooden wheels for belt grinder. Any reason not to do it?
July 6, 2023 -
I’m in the process of designing my very first belt grinder, and can see the price ramping up quickly. And that’s without factoring in the giant aluminum wheels I’ll need.
So, I’m considering just making them out of wood initially, and then maybe change them out for aluminum later on. Is there any reason not to do it? Maybe the contact wheel might end up with a shorter life, but for the price of wood I can live with that.
Also, how thick are your sections on your grinder? I’m uncertain if I need 5mm plates or 10mm plates. House made revolution seems to use 10mm

My first grinder had a drive wheel made out of several layers of MDF that were glued together. I chose MDF as I thought it would be less likely to fall apart. The other wheels were off a long board - as in skateboard wheels, but wider at approx 50mm. I ran this setup for about three years before I bought a "good" grinder. I wish I had kept it as there are definitely things that I preferred on my dodgy setup vs the factory made one
