June 19, 2014 - Many gas fireplaces are not tested for co-linear adaptation so there's another reason to go with an insert. If you WERE to try to adapt a horizontally vented gas FIREPLACE in there you would have to drill, chisel, abrasively grind or saw thru to the inside for the DV pipe to attach to the cap.

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Installing Direct Vent Fireplace
April 20, 2014 -

I recently purchased a used Kingsman fireplace, and I'm looking to install it in my basement. I'm a little confused on some things and after looking through the manuals I think I'm even more confused. The fireplace itself (Kingsman Natural Gas ZDV4224), requires a 7 inch exterior by 4 inch interior stove pipe. After looking the pipe itself is very expensive, but the least expensive seems to be the Flex Pipe. I can find very little information on it, and I have a few questions that I'm hoping someone here can answer. Does it require any sort of conversion to attach to the actual fireplace, or can I run the pipe directly to it. Also if i ordered 20 feet, but only have around 16 to 18 feet to worry about, do i need to cut the flex pipe itself or can i just reduce the length by folding in? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, and any suggestions on how to approach this differently would be great too! Thanks!

Looking at the manual, it looks as though there is no need for an adapter at the fireplace. You should just be able to caulk it with the approved high temp caulk, attach the inner pipe, and clamp it with the optional clamp or use self tapping metal screws to secure it. Repeat with the outer pipe. I would cut the pipes to as close to the actual length as possible. Leaving excess could lead to it expanding some and creating dips in horizontal runs or small bends in vertical runs. These dips and bends could cause air intake and exhaust problems that may make the fireplace not work or not work properly. And depending on how you install it, you may not be able to get at the vent pipe to fix a possible error. If you do leave the excess, and it creates a problem, the worst that will happen is that it just won't work. It will starve for fresh combustion air either because it doesn't get enough or exhaust gas doesn't flow and builds up. If you have a fireplace shop in your area, they may give you some more ideas or answer other questions. Especially if you buy the vent pipe from them.

Hi "Does it require any sort of conversion to attach to the actual fireplace, or can I run the pipe directly to it. " The fireplace end of a Kingsman flex kit uses large hose clamps and sealant, directly attached to the fireplace collar/s. Other brands of DV pipe will need a special adapter (duravent, icc etc). "Also if i ordered 20 feet, but only have around 16 to 18 feet to worry about, do i need to cut the flex pipe itself or can i just reduce the length by folding in? " It is compressed, so to use the full length you must stretch it, so just don't stretch more than you need. However part of the inner liner goes into the hard pipe at the roof (if up venting) so the flex part will not go the full 20'. (page 23 fig 3) Be sure you get the full roof kit, roof support, hard pipe etc. (page 23 fig 1,2) "any suggestions" Follow the instructions, Maintain clearances!, Flex kits wiggle and need extra support and strapping, No guessing. zdv4224 manual

You can do both vertical or horizontal vent install, in the instruction manual they have guidelines about maximum vent lengths. If u have long vertical vent , u may need a restrictor to slow the speed of exhaust fumes or it will kill ur pilot. Some gas fireplace has restrictor plate inside, which means u can put it later after u assemble all components.
