The 32 Best Horror Movies of 2019, Ranked – Scary New Movies to Watch | Rotten Tomatoes
October 31, 2022 - Happy Death Day 2U was the first 2019 horror movie to connect with critics, even if its Tomatometer score didn’t approach the original’s high mark. In fact, virtually all of this year’s sequels all fell around in the same area: You’ll see Annabelle Comes Home, It Chapter Two, and Zombieland Double Tap all clumped together in this guide.

Despite not being quite as good as Ari Aster’s Hereditary, his follow up Midsommar has been my favourite horror film of the year so far. It follows a more conventional (and predictable) horror movie trajectory, but I still think Aster is a fantastic director. More on urban75.net

Discussion

Let's create a list of our favorite horror movies based on how good they are! Consider factors like rewatchability, story quality, and overall effectiveness. This list should focus on how well the movies hold up today, considering them at face value, not on their legacy or influence on the genre.

Here's how it works:

  1. Comment below with your nomination for your favorite horror movie of the year in the title. Do not comment duplicate movie titles. If your favorite movie has already been mentioned, simply upvote that comment instead. Note: Release dates will be based on when a film has its theatrical release (US), not whenever it premiered at festivals. So for example, the winner of 2023 was Talk to Me, which premiered in October 2022, but didn't get a wide release until July 2023. This list will use the latter date.

  2. Upvote the movie title(s) you agree with.

  3. The single comment with the most upvotes will be crowned the unanimous favorite for the current letter. If a movie title is posted multiple times, only the comment with the most upvotes will be counted. This prevents users from influencing the results by upvoting multiple comments for the same movie.

So let's have it, what're your favorite movies of the year in the title?

Past winners:

  • 2023: Talk to Me

    • Runner up: When Evil Lurks

  • 2022: Barbarian

    • Runner up: Prey

  • 2021: The Night House

    • Runner up: Titane

  • 2020: The Dark and the Wicked

    • Runner up: Possessor

The 13 Best Horror Movies of 2019
April 24, 2020 - Be that it as it may, “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” succeeds as a special YA horror movie by how it bleeds together the discrete chapters of Schwartz’s anthologies into an overarching narrative that’s aimed squarely at its target audience.

Best Horror Movies of 2019 — The Bloodlust
January 31, 2020 - The only film as clever as this one in 2019 was Parasite, & that’s the most lauded movie of the year. Not too shabby, One Cut of the Dead. This is maybe the best love letter to filmmaking to come out this decade, & yes, I’ve seen Hugo. Jordan Peele excels at so many things you almost want to hate him. How can someone be so good at both comedy & horror, AND have the ability to meld the two together so seamlessly?

November 17, 2019 - Ma features a great performance by Octavia Spencer, but it never goes far enough to become the campy bloodbath it promises to be and ends up being rather tepid. Little Monsters is a horror comedy which is at it’s best before the zombies. It’s likeable enough, Life is Beautiful with zombies instead of concentration camps. Looking forward to The Lighthouse and the two big Stephen King movies, It Chapter Two and Dr.

Brad Picks the Best Horror Films of 2019! - Bloody Disgusting
December 28, 2020 - Adam Egypt Mortimer announced himself with the hallucinogenic Jacob’s Ladder-esque Daniel Isn’t Real; producer Ant Timpson’s directorial debut Come to Daddy was a surefire crowd-pleaser that’s as shocking as it is funny; Josh Lobo made his mark on the horror scene with his micro I Trapped the Devil, a moody, dark and colorful modern spin on the “Twilight Zone” episode “The Howling Man”; Babadook director Jennifer Kent returned with The Nightingale, a brutal, shocking and heartbreaking revenge tale that I wasn’t and will never be prepared for; and then there was Jordan Downey’

January 3, 2020 - Well, that does it for my “Top 19 of 2019”. All told, it was a good year for horror films (3 from Hell and the Pet Sematary remake aside); Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was surprisingly good as was the Child’s Play remake and both deserve a mention here.

Best Horror Movies of 2019, Ranked: Scariest Movies to Watch from 2019 - Thrillist
January 17, 2020 - Definitely not for all tastes (trigger warning, again, for violence against children) but adventurous genre fans will probably appreciate the creepy occult goings-on and the sudden jolts of visceral horror. Where to watch it: Shudder ... Release date: April 12 Cast: David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Daniel Dae Kim Director: Neil Marshall (The Descent) Why it's good: While most of the critics (and the opening weekend audience) made their opinions immediately clear on the new movie version of Hellboy -- and the reactions were not kind -- I found myself having a fairly decent time with this R-rated adaptation -- despite some obvious glitches in the areas of clunky editing and inconsistent special effects quality.

June 15, 2019 - While some thought writer-director Jordan Peele's doppelganger horror tale became somewhat, well, untethered from reality by its conclusion, Us boasts memorable performances and twists. The movie may also be the first time an Oscar-winner has found quite so much (self-admitted) inspiration from the horror film C.H.U.D. ... 2019 has proven to be a vintage year for the creepy kid horror movie thanks to Pet Sematary, Us, and this trio.
