r/Domains on Reddit: Hostinger renewal is super expensive, why so? :/
December 18, 2021 -
I bought a .tech domain at a cheap price but the renewal price is now going through the roof. I registered from my home country, INDIA. It is costing me approx 4,000₹(50$) to renew my domain.

Two things: Renewals are how registrars make money. They assume that once you register a domain for cheap, you will want to keep it. The money they lose on the registration is more than recouped by gouging you for renewals. Use a website like https://tld-list.com/tld/tech to compare prices and get a better deal. Donuts registered a very, very, very large number of TLDs. Each costs them $250k per year to maintain. They need to recoupe operational costs, so they slap a premium tag on as many domains as they can and charge you extra for it. Donuts is not the only registry that does this. The .co registry thinsk anything 4 characters or shorter is premium. .site, .host, etc all charge extra for <= 3 characters. If your domain is not premium, you should not be paying $50 for a .tech - going rate should be ~$20 +/- $5.

Non .com registries having expensive renewals is not new. They let you register for cheap and then charge your life savings. If possible I suggest switching to a .com if the renewal is too much.

Answer (1 of 3): Unless it is a compulsion, my 2 cent suggestion is to not to transfer your domain to another company. Simply buy hosting space from another company, and 'point' the domain to the new host. So, you'd be renewing domain from Hostinger (presumably after one year), but host it with a...

How much does a domain name cost?
April 27, 2025 - Most commonly, people change domain registrars for better maintenance or support services, refund policies, or for wanting to manage both their hosting plan and domain name from one place. Most registrars won’t charge you for transferring elsewhere, but you might encounter transfer fees at your new registrar. Sometimes, you can score a free transfer service but might be expected to pay for a full year’s renewal upfront.
